How to Have the Perfect Ballroom Competition Hair

Competition hairstyles can look a little intimidating which is why most competitors choose to get their hair done professionally on competition days.

However if you’re brave enough to try it on your own or want to make sure you can keep it nice & neat after it’s done these insider tips & tricks are for you!

? Get the right tools and products!

If you are going to heat style your hair (curling or straightening iron) make sure you use a heat protecting spray. You don’t want to fry your hair…trust us.??

Here are some items you’ll most likely need no matter what hairdo you’re going for:

? Bobby pins

? Clear elastics

? Hairnet (preferably that matches the color of your hair)

? Hairspray/Hair gel/Hair glue

? Hair extensions that match your hair color (especially if you want to do braids)

⚡️ Pro tip: 2nd or 3rd-day hair is easier to work with than freshly washed hair!

⚡️Pro tip: To get rid of all the hairspray, gel and/or hair glue without damaging your hair, run conditioner through your hair and rinse with warm water BEFORE you shampoo it.

?? Make sure your hairstyle will last through all your heats

Ballroom dancing is a sport, you’re going to want your hair out of your face and secured back so it doesn’t get in your face while you’re dancing.

Even though appearance isn’t a specific category when it comes to judging, you can be sure that judges will notice if your hair is coming undone and if your overall appearance isn’t neat.✨

⚡️ Pro tip: Before you start braiding hair or putting it into a bun, lightly coat the hair you’re working with hair gel or a texture spray. The added texture will prevent your hair from slipping out of whatever hairdo you’re going for.

⚡️Pro tip: Once you’re done with your hair, hairspray it generously and blow dry it on the lowest power setting to set your hair.

??? Go for versatile hairdos if you are dancing different styles

Unless you have short hair (no longer than a bob) your hair must be up! It is very hard to get in a closed position if your hair is long and worn down because it will get caught in your partners’ hands! Not to mention you could hit your partner in the face during turns and spins.

⚡️Hairstyles for Standard & Smooth: The most common hairdo for these styles is a low bun. It’s simple and compliments the overall elegant look of dances like the waltz, foxtrot, and tango! You can make it a little bit more exciting by adding a few hair jewels or twisting strands of hair into patterns like the picture below.

⚡️Hairstyles for Latin & Rhythm: For these styles, there is a little bit more you can do when it comes to your hair! You could do a low ponytail with a braid wrapped around the base, a high braided ponytail, or a braided bun!

? ? Don’t be afraid to accessorize!

⚡️ Pro Tip: If you run out of hair glue you can use eyelash glue to add a few gems to your mane, but make sure to wash your hair gently with warm water to prevent breakage.

⚡️Pro tip: Keep hairspray away from your accessories! It will make them look dull over time and might also weaken the backing on some of your hair pieces.
