DANCING WITH THE STARS SEASON 19: WEEK 2 RECAP AND RESULTS SHOW

“I DANCED WITH HIS BROTHER. I GET IT. IF YOU EVER NEED TO TALK, I’M AVAILABLE. CALL ME, MAYBE?” – ERIN ANDREWS

With the prop malfunction last week during Betsey Johnson and Tony Dovolani’s performance and the disappointed look on Janel Parrish’s face after her dance with Valentin Chmerkovskiy, Season 19 got off to a rough start.  This week though, both couples underwent a complete transformation, utterly renewing our optimism for the weeks to come.

Reflecting on their first performance, Janel said, “Last week wasn’t quite precise.  So this week, I am going to work hard to make sure everything that I do is tidy.”

During Val’s piece, he explained, “I’m pushing her really hard.  I think she deserves it.  I wouldn’t be doing her justice if I didn’t.”

He goes on to say “Without pain, work, struggle…there’s, uh, no happiness at the end of the tunnel.”

No truer words could be spoken about this type of competition.  Dancing is something that takes hard work, dedication, and hours upon hours of work to become great.  The upside of it all is you not only look great, but you’re having fun throughout the whole journey.

Janel and Val danced a beautiful Foxtrot to “Call Me Maybe” by  Carly Rae Jepsen.  Dressed like Cinderella and her Prince Charming, Janel and Val trotted the across the floor with a refined grace and a kick of modern style.

Julianne Hough was the first to comment.  “Well, that wasn’t really a traditional Foxtrot, but I say screw tradition, because I loved it!  It was great, but I have to say one thing though.  I have to say one thing.  Um, for future weeks, if you’re still here, um, you need to be, uh, more conscious about planting your feet into the ground because when you go, you do a spin and then you kind of wobble a little bit.  But your body is good, you just can’t move your feet.  Stick it girl.”

Bruno Tonioli followed and said, “Baby, no maybe for me!  You can call me any time you want!  She’s hot to trot, I tell you that.  The speed, the way you managed the speed of this dance, the spins, turns, the runs . . .  Yes, just a couple of times the supporting foot wasn’t quite strong enough to give you that kind of strength on the line, but otherwise, for me it was almost perfect.”

Carrie Ann Inaba was next to offer her feedback.  “Last week you were giving us bang bang and this week you gave us effortless elegance.  I am so impressed with the versatility that you showed us tonight with this dance.  I also agree with Bruno…that was close to perfect.”

Lastly, Len Goodman said, “I thought the part in hold was lovely.  I would have liked, Val, you know, to see a little bit more in hold.  But Janel, I tell you, you can dance!  You can really dance!  You’re good, you’re very good.”

After great reviews across the board, Janel and Val headed up to get their scores.

Erin greeted them and said, “See, all the Val instruction paid off, right?  It all paid off. They said you were almost near perfect out there. I know you weren’t too happy with Week One.  You wanted to work on being more precise.  How did it feel today?”

Janel’s response was, “It felt really, really good.  It felt really good.  I like the tough love.  You know, that’s how you improve.  That’s how you improve.”

After holding the microphone a little too close, Erin asked Janel, “How was that for tough love?  I just got you right in the chin.  Sorry about that.”  Turning her attention to Val, she asks, “What did you think?  I mean, you know, you said you got to soften it up.  How did she do?”

Val replied, “She did great!  I’m really proud of her.  You know, she works hard, and it’s a lot of, a lot of work to put up with me, so I applaud her for that.”

Erin reminds us, “I danced with his brother.  I get it.  If you ever need to talk, I’m available.  Call me maybe, I don’t know!  Um, let’s get your scores.”

The results were: 9, 8, 8, 9 – 34!

Erin cheers for their total score of 34 out of 40 and asks the couple, “A little happier now?”

Janel said, “Yes, I’m so happy.  I’m so happy.”

Val’s response was, “This is very bad news for you ‘cuz, you know, the training worked.”

Erin and Janel looked at each other and said, “Uh oh.  Oh no.  This is not good.”

Undeterred, Val informs Janel, “I can’t be nice from here on in.”

Not a bad score for Week 2!  We are all proud of Val for pushing Janel to embrace her inner potential and become the dancer we all knew was fighting to break out!

Next, we turn to Miss Betsey Johnson and Tony Dovolani.

Together they worked extra hard this week on their Foxtrot to “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper.

Betsey rocked the stage donning a traditional 50’s style poodle skirt in her favorite colors, black and pink.  Her hair was pulled back in a sophisticated updo, and she was adorned with gorgeous jewelry.

The reason I am going into detail about her appearance is because she looked absolutely stunning.  This was the first time I’ve ever seen Betsey outside of her usual fun and over-the-top style and it absolutely worked for her!

Moving across the floor with absolute elegance and composure, Betsey threw the judges a curveball with this complete turnaround from last week’s disaster performance.

On her feet, bowing over the table, Carrie Ann called out, “All hail Queen Betsey!  My God!  You are exquisite!  I had no idea who you were underneath all of that fun stuff that you did before.  You are exquisite.  You dance beautifully.  You’re flexible.  What a transformation to see in you.  Yes!  Well done.”

Equally pleased, Len said, “Last week was a night to forget.  Tonight is a night to remember.  I tell ya’.  Lovely routine. Lovely dancing.  Betsey, I’ve never seen you look so great, because normally you got all that stuff on.  You look fabulous.  Well done!”

Julianne Hough’s response was, “Instead of it being a makeover, it was a make-under.  It was simple, it was elegant, it was beautiful, and it was timeless.”

Last but not least, Bruno said, “My darling, here we got rebirth, and revived glamour queen of the night.”  Comparing her to Norma Desmond, he tells her,  “You’re definitely ready for your close-up my darling, and Mr. DeMille is delighted.”

The results were: 7,7,7,7 – 28!

What a fantastic comeback from the 5’s they received last week.

This week America sent home the well-known talk show host Tavis Smiley with his partner Sharna Burgess.

Erin says, “You said you wanted to do something crazy and fun for your birthday but you saw this is hard work.”

Tavis replys, “I do not live a life of regret number one. Um number two the art of dance I absolutely love but like anything in life it takes time to perfect it, and if you’re on a book tour you only have 8 or 10 hours a week to do it. I don’t care what it is, you have to spend time at your vocation perfecting it. So it’s been a wonderful experience. I wish everybody all the best but I loved it.”
