Where he comes from

Mark-Bruce started dancing at seven and trained in freestyle, hustle, rock ’n’ roll and ballroom before settling on International Latin American — the style that made him a four-time undefeated Open Latin American Champion among thirteen South African titles.

Competition

He and his partner Lizl were South Africa’s number-one selected couple for world championship events, and he reached the quarter-finals of the IDSF Youth World Championships in Singapore and the IDSF Amateur World Championships in Germany, the Czech Republic and Australia.

On stage

After competing, Mark-Bruce and Lizl were the featured couple in Simply Ballroom at the Golden Nugget, toured America in the show with Debbie Reynolds in 2007, and from 2012 were the featured ballroom couple in Invitation to Dance, choreographed by Louis van Amstel of Dancing with the Stars.

For salsa students

The useful part for a salsa beginner is the Latin training underneath: timing, hip action and turns that finish on balance.

06 No Surprises The whole first visit, start to finish, so there's nothing left to be nervous about.

Your First Salsa Class,
Step by Step

Most people arrive a little nervous and leave having danced a basic step to real music. Here's how the first visit runs. More general tips are in preparing for your first dance class.

Instructor counting a Latin basic step while three beginners follow along Counted out loud · 1-2-3, 5-6-7
  1. You park once and walk in to Suite 160

We're at 1501 Lake Robbins Drive in the Waterway Square District. Come in whatever you'd wear to dinner, with smooth-soled shoes — leather soles beat sneakers for turning.

  2. Five minutes on why you want to dance

A wedding, date night, a cruise, the Friday social or just something new — each one changes what we teach first, so we ask.

  3. The basic step, counted out loud

Forward and back on 1-2-3, 5-6-7, pausing on 4 and 8. We count until you can hear the rhythm in the music on your own.

  4. The side break and your first right turn

Where spotting comes in: we show you where to look so you finish the turn facing your partner, not dizzy and facing the wall.

  5. The cross-body lead, the move salsa is built around

Lead and follow swap places in the slot. Once you have this, most of the patterns you see on a social floor start to make sense.

  6. A full song, then a plan with no pressure

You dance a whole song with your instructor, then we show you what a realistic path looks like for your goal. Nothing to sign that day.

07 On1 · On2 · Cuban The question nobody in The Woodlands answers before you pay for a class.

Salsa On1, On2 or Cuban:
Which Will You Learn?

Salsa is a Latin partner dance built on a quick-quick-slow rhythm across eight counts, rooted in Cuban son and mambo and shaped in New York and Puerto Rico. Dancers step on six of the eight beats and pause on two. Most beginners in The Woodlands start with salsa On1, where the break step lands on beat one.

The three big families of salsa share the same music but feel different on the floor. The difference that matters most to a beginner is which beat you "break" on — the step where you change direction. For the longer background, see our page on learning salsa at Dance With Me.

Where Everyone Starts

Salsa On1 · LA Style

You break forward on beat one and dance in a straight line, or "slot". It is the easiest timing to hear in the music, it is what we teach every beginner first, and it is what you'll see most on a Friday night on the Waterway. Your first class covers the basic step, the side break, a right turn and the cross-body lead — enough to dance a full song with a partner.

The Next Step

Salsa On2 · New York Style

Same slot, but the break lands on beat two, which sits closer to the conga and feels smoother and more musical. Its ballroom cousin is mambo, one of the American Rhythm dances our instructors compete in — see the difference between mambo and salsa. We add On2 in private lessons once your On1 basic is automatic.

On Request

Cuban Salsa · Casino

Circular rather than slotted: partners turn around each other with arm wraps and tangled-looking patterns that untangle on the beat. Rueda de casino is the group version, called out by a leader. We introduce Cuban turn patterns in private lessons for students who want variety or plan to dance in Miami or Havana.

"Most beginners think spins are about the arms. They're about the head and the feet. We teach salsa turns with the same spotting ballroom dancers use, so you finish a double turn facing your partner instead of the wall — and you're not dizzy when you get there."

08 When Salsa Runs The honest version: how salsa fits our calendar, and the one slot that never moves.

This Month's Salsa Schedule

We teach every style we list all year round. What rotates is the monthly group class lineup, and the studio publishes exactly which dance each class covers, week by week. Salsa comes round in the Saturday Afternoon Grooving class, which moves through salsa, two-step, zouk, bachata and hustle across the month. We don't run a dedicated weekly salsa-only class right now, so we'd rather tell you that here than have you find out at the front desk.

09 The Honest Version Three ways to learn salsa in The Woodlands, and who each one is actually for.

Private Lesson, Group Class
or Bar Social? Which Fits You

There are three ways into salsa around the Waterway, and all three are worth doing. A free lesson at a Latin night is a great way to find out whether you like it. What it can't be is a curriculum: thirty minutes, a crowded floor, no feedback, and a different pattern next week. A studio class is slower and costs money, and it's the part that makes the Friday night actually fun.

Salsa options in The Woodlands, compared
Option Best for Typical cost Trade-off
Studio private lessonFast progress, deadlines, shy beginners$49 intro here; about $80–$170 an hour locallyHigher ongoing price
Studio group classMeeting people, steady practiceAbout $25–$30 a classThe group sets the pace
Free lesson at a bar socialTrying it onceFree with entry to about $15Short, crowded, no feedback

Why a private lesson first? Because salsa is a lead-and-follow dance, and the fastest way to learn to follow a lead — or give one — is to dance with someone who does it perfectly and can tell you exactly what they felt. That's the instructor in your intro lesson. The group class then gives you what a private can't: lots of different partners, each a little different, which is what a real social floor feels like.

Where to find the Latin nights, with days and addresses, is in where to salsa dance in The Woodlands further down this page.

10 Salsa or Bachata? Under a minute, and it settles the question most beginners ask first.

Salsa or Bachata:
Which to Learn First?

Both run on the Waterway's Latin nights, and most people end up learning both. The difference is the count: salsa is quick-quick-slow over eight beats and travels in a slot with a lot of turns; bachata is a four-count step with a tap or hip on the fourth beat, closer and slower to start.

Our honest advice: start with whichever song made you want to dance. If you want turns and energy, start with salsa. If you want something you can dance by the end of one lesson, bachata is gentler — then add salsa. Both come round on our monthly group calendar, and you can mix them in private lessons. More on learning bachata.

11 Learn Here, Dance There The part most studios never mention, because it involves you leaving the building.

Where to Salsa Dance in
The Woodlands After Class

Classes aren't the point. The point is the Friday a few weeks from now when the band starts, the floor fills and you go out on it. The Woodlands has a small, friendly salsa scene, and the best of it sits on the Waterway — a few minutes' walk from our door. Here's roughly how the week runs, as of September 2026. Nights move, so check with the venue before you go.

Thursday

Latin night on Waterway Avenue

A bachata-and-salsa night with a short lesson before the social has been running on Thursdays at Rose Rooftop, 20 Waterway Avenue, for about $15. Listings changed in 2026, so check it's still on before you head over — when it runs, it's the most beginner-friendly social in town.

Friday

Salsa Night at Como Social Club

Every Friday at Como Social Club, 2 Waterway Square Place, with live Latin music from 9 PM to 1 AM (21+). This is the one to aim for: a real band, a real floor, and it's a short walk from the studio. Go early while the floor is roomy.

Monthly

Dance With Me social parties

Our own parties are the low-pressure rehearsal: the same students you take class with, salsa mixed with bachata and ballroom, and instructors on the floor. Your first invitation is part of the $49 intro.

Couples dancing close under party lights at a Latin social night From the studio to the social

One tip for your first salsa social: ask for a dance early, before the floor gets crowded, and tell your partner you're new — experienced dancers lead simpler patterns for beginners, and everyone on that floor learned the same way. If you'd like a rehearsal first, that's exactly what our social parties are for.

In Town Center, by The Woodlands Waterway

We're on Lake Robbins Drive in the Waterway Square District, in the heart of Town Center — a short walk from The Woodlands Waterway, Market Street and The Woodlands Mall, and minutes from the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. Most students park once and make an evening of it: a salsa lesson, then dinner or the Friday social a few minutes' walk away. We opened here in December 2016 as Dance With Me's second studio in Texas.

Students come to us from across south Montgomery County and north Harris County, including Spring, Shenandoah, Oak Ridge North, Conroe, Magnolia, Tomball, Montgomery, Willis, Kingwood and Humble. Running late? Call us — we'd rather hold your place than have you rush through Town Center traffic.

13 The Difference

Why The Woodlands Learns
Salsa Here

Dance With Me was founded by Maksim and Valentin Chmerkovskiy of Dancing With The Stars. That's a nice sentence, and it isn't the reason to book a salsa lesson — it's the reason the standard of teaching is what it is. These four are the reasons to book.

The short version: you can learn one salsa pattern at a time in a crowded room, or you can spend an hour learning how salsa actually works — the timing, the lead and the turn — and enjoy every Friday after that.

Championship Latin Instructors

World-championship Latin competitors and a national Rhythm champion, named on this page with their real credentials. Around here, most salsa pages don't name who teaches you at all.

A $49 Intro That Includes More

A private lesson plus a group class or a social party invitation, for $49. Intro offers nearby run up to $99 and often cover one or two short privates only.

Turns That Finish on Balance

We teach salsa spins with the spotting technique ballroom dancers use, so double turns end facing your partner, not the wall. It's the most common thing beginners struggle with on a social floor.

Steps From the Waterway

1501 Lake Robbins Drive, in the Waterway Square District. The Friday salsa night is a short walk away, so you can take a lesson and walk to the dance floor.

14 Questions, Answered Everything people ask before their first salsa class in The Woodlands.

Salsa Classes in The Woodlands — Frequently Asked Questions

No. Most people who take salsa at Dance With Me The Woodlands come on their own. In a group class partners rotate every few minutes, so you dance with several people and nobody sits out. In a private lesson your instructor is your partner. Couples can rotate or stay together — your choice.

Yes — most of our salsa students start as complete beginners. Your first lesson is private, so we count the basic out loud until you can hear it in the music, then add a right turn and the cross-body lead. If you can walk to a beat, you can learn salsa.

At Dance With Me The Woodlands new students start with a $49 intro: a private lesson plus a group class or an invitation to our next social party. After that, group classes are $30 and private lessons run $132–$170 depending on the program. Around The Woodlands, group classes generally cost about $25 to $30.

Our group lineup rotates monthly, and salsa currently comes round in the Saturday Afternoon Grooving class on its salsa weeks. The studio publishes each week's dance on the monthly calendar, or call (832) 777-7200 for the next date. Private salsa lessons can be booked any time the studio is open.

Beginners start with On1, or LA style, where you break forward on the first beat — the easiest timing to hear and the one most people dance socially in The Woodlands. Once your basic is automatic you can add On2, or New York style, in private lessons, and we can introduce Cuban-style turns as well.

Most people are comfortable leading or following a basic within three to five lessons, and can hold their own at a social after about six to eight weeks of regular classes. Adding a private lesson every week or two shortens that. Our social parties are the rehearsal before a night out on the Waterway.

Clothes you can move and turn in, and shoes with a smooth sole — leather soles, character shoes or dance shoes. Avoid rubber-soled sneakers, which grip the floor and stop your turns. Block heels are safer than stilettos. You don't need to buy dance shoes to start.

Start with whichever music made you want to dance. Salsa is faster, travels in a line and has more turns; bachata is a slower four-count step that most people can dance by the end of one lesson. Both run at the Waterway Latin nights, and you can try both in your $49 intro.

Como Social Club at 2 Waterway Square Place runs Salsa Night every Friday with live Latin music from 9 PM (21+). A Thursday bachata and salsa night has also run on Waterway Avenue, so check listings. Both are a short walk from our studio, and our own social parties are a relaxed place to practise first.

Dance With Me The Woodlands is at 1501 Lake Robbins Drive, Suite 160, The Woodlands, TX 77380, in the Waterway Square District near Market Street and The Woodlands Mall. We're open Monday to Friday 10 AM – 9 PM and Saturday 10 AM – 3 PM, and closed Sunday.

No. Our classes are built for adults of any age, fitness level or experience, and salsa is gentle on the body when it's taught with good posture and smooth footwork. We adjust turns and tempo to you, and a private lesson lets you go at exactly your own pace.

Yes. We run private salsa sessions for bachelorettes, birthdays and team events at our Waterway Square studio — your group, your music and one instructor. Most groups learn a basic, a turn and a short combination in an hour. Call (832) 777-7200 or use the form to check dates.
