Line Dancing Classes in Austin at a Glance

Line dancing classes in Austin for complete beginners, taught in a real studio at our Austin dance studio in Domain NORTHSIDE. First, the thing most Austin pages skip: line dancing is not two-stepping. You dance it on your own, in rows. The Texas Two-Step is a partner dance.

You don't need a partner or any experience. What you get instead of a crowded bar lesson is a class that breaks each dance down, repeats it, and corrects you by name, with free garage parking a few minutes off MoPac and I-35. Dance With Me was founded by Maksim and Valentin Chmerkovskiy and Tony Dovolani, and most beginners leave their first class having danced one full line dance, start to finish.

In short

Line dancing classes in Austin teach choreographed group dances performed in rows — no partner, no experience needed. Line dancing is not two-stepping: two-step is a partner dance that travels around the floor, while a line dance is danced solo, in formation, to a repeating sequence. At Dance With Me near The Domain, most beginners learn a full dance in their first class.

02 Line Dance vs Two-Step If you searched for line dancing and landed on a two-step school, this is why.

Line Dancing or Two-Stepping? The Difference Most Austin Pages Skip

Line dancing and two-stepping are not the same thing. Two-step is a partner dance that travels counter-clockwise around the floor. A line dance is danced alone, in rows, to a repeating sequence — no partner required.

Where you'll use it in AustinLine dance nights at the dance halls, weddings, partiesAlmost every honky-tonk in town
Which one did you see?People in rows, all facing the same wayCouples circling the floor

Austin mixes the two up more than most cities, and for a good reason: most of the paid country dance lessons in town are two-step lessons. The honky-tonks on South Lamar, South Congress and West 5th teach couples to travel the floor. The line dancing mostly happens on a few weeknights further north, and it's drop-in.

On a busy dance-hall floor you'll see both at once. The couples use the outside lane and circle it counter-clockwise — that lane is called the line of dance, which is the two-step idea, not the line dance one. The line dancers stay in the middle, in rows, facing a wall and turning together. Knowing which is which is half of not getting in the way on your first night out.

You'll probably want both eventually. Austin floors switch between them all night. Start with line dancing because you can do it on your own, and add the two-step in a private lesson when you're ready — tell us at your intro which one you came for and we'll plan around it.

“Line dancing and two-stepping get used interchangeably in Austin and they're completely different skills. Two-step is a partner dance that travels. A line dance is you, in a row, hitting the same 32 counts as everyone else. If you learn the grapevine, the heel dig and the four-wall turn, you can pick up most line dances by watching one rotation — you don't have to memorize them one at a time.”
Dance tipDance With Me Austin

Not sure which one you want? We teach both. Tell us in your intro lesson and your instructor will point you at the right one in about five minutes.

03 Curriculum Nobody else in Austin publishes one. Every other line dance option in town is drop-in.

What You'll Actually Learn

We teach the steps first and the dances second. Almost every line dance is built from the same short list of moves, arranged in a different order. Learn the moves properly and each new dance stops being something to memorize from scratch — you watch it once and recognize the pieces. That's the difference between a class and a free lesson at a bar, where you get one dance, once, at full tempo. If you want the background first, here is what line dancing is and how it's structured.

  1. Grapevine (the vine)Step to the side, cross behind, step to the side, touch. The single most common pattern in line dancing.
  2. Heel dig and toe touchTap a heel forward or a toe beside you without putting weight on it — the move that trips up most beginners.
  3. Kick-ball-changeA small kick, a quick step onto the ball of the foot, then a change of weight. Fast, and it gets easy.
  4. Shuffle (triple step)Three quick steps in two counts — the "cha cha" inside the Cowboy Cha Cha.
  5. Rock stepRock your weight forward or back and return. It's how most dances change direction.
  6. Pivot turnStep forward and turn a quarter or a half on the balls of your feet. This is what makes you face a new wall.
  7. Stomp, hitch and scuffThe country accents: a stomp with weight or without, a knee lift, a heel brushed along the floor.
  8. Counts, walls and restarts32 or 64 counts; 1-wall, 2-wall and 4-wall dances; and the tags and restarts that throw people off.

Three levels, in order

Beginner Steps before dances

The core steps above, counting in eights, and your first full 32-count dance facing all four walls. Most people get their first complete dance in the first class.

Improver More dances, faster

Longer sequences, turns and restarts, tempo changes, and reading a step sheet. This is where you start picking dances up by watching instead of being walked through them.

Social-ready On a real floor

Dancing at tempo, in a crowd, with no counting out loud — plus the etiquette: where to stand, how to join a dance already running, and staying out of the two-step lane.

The three kinds of line dance you'll learn

Country & Western Line Dances

The dance-hall standards — what you'll see when the band or the DJ calls a line dance in Austin. Heel digs, shuffles, stomps and quarter turns, usually to a two-step or cha-cha rhythm.

Two Texas traditions, the Ten Step and the Schottische, travel around the floor like a two-step and are danced in lines or with a partner — we teach where they fit. More in a beginner's guide to country line dancing.

Boot Scootin' BoogieCotton-Eyed JoeCowboy Cha ChaTush PushCopperhead RoadWatermelon Crawl

Modern & Viral Line Dances

The newer choreography that keeps the floor young: dances built on current country and crossover hits, including the ones that spread through TikTok during the 2024–25 country crossover wave.

This list changes every few months, so it's the lane your instructor updates most. Ask for the one you saw at a wedding or online — if it's being danced in Austin, it goes on the list.

Party & Crossover Line Dances

The four that get called at almost every wedding, birthday and office party, whatever the rest of the music is. Short, repetitive and forgiving — the fastest win for anyone who wants to stop sitting these out.

Also the best place to start if a wedding or an event is the reason you're here.

Each week builds on the last — new steps, then a new dance made from them — so you're progressing, not starting over. No partner, no experience, and you can drop in once you've had your intro.

How Much Do Line Dancing Lessons Cost in Austin?

Line dancing in Austin runs from free at a dance hall to about $30 for a studio group class and $120–$155 for a private hour. At Dance With Me Austin you start with a $49 private intro lesson, then group classes are $30.

What line dancing costs in Austin

Free line dancing at a dance hall$0One dance at a time, in a crowd — no progression, usually 21+
Bar lesson with a cover chargeAbout $5–$15A taught lesson, then a social night; still drop-in, and usually two-step

Private lessonAbout $120–$155 per hourOne-on-one — learn a specific dance fast
Dance With Me intro offer$49A full private, one-on-one intro lesson with a Dance With Me Austin instructor

$49 is not the cheapest line dancing in Austin — free is. The free nights are a great night out and you should go to them. What they can't do is teach you: one dance, taught once, at tempo, to a room of a hundred people, and a different dance next week.

The $49 buys a private lesson where somebody watches your feet. You leave knowing the core steps, having danced a full line dance, and knowing which of our programs fits what you actually want — a weekly class, a few privates before a wedding, or a group booking. Nobody chases you afterwards if the answer is none of them.

06 The Free Scene Austin's free line dancing is good. Here's exactly what it is — and isn't.

Free Line Dancing in Austin — and What It Does and Doesn't Teach You

Yes, there is free line dancing around Austin. The best known is Tuesday night at Maverick's Dance Hall North in Pflugerville — free line dancing from 7pm, with a $5 advanced lesson at 6:30. Wild West in Cedar Park runs all-levels line dance lessons on Thursday and Saturday evenings. Most of the other lessons you'll hear about — Broken Spoke, The White Horse, Donn's Depot, Sagebrush — are two-step lessons, not line dancing.

Use both. The honest answer is that the free nights and a class do different jobs. The dance hall is where you use line dancing; a class is where you get it. The best plan is to take the class and keep going out on a Tuesday or a Thursday — just without standing at the edge of the floor for the first hour.

The one gap the free scene can't close is age and time. Nearly every honky-tonk lesson in Austin is 21 and over and starts in the evening, which leaves out anyone who isn't 21 yet, anyone who'd rather learn before dinner than at 10pm, and anyone who'd rather not learn in a bar at all.

07 Your First Class The part nobody tells you before you walk in.

What Happens in Your First Line Dancing Class

Everyone starts with a private, one-on-one intro lesson, so by the time you join the group you already know the core steps and you've already met an instructor. Here's how the first hour goes.

  1. Park free in the Domain NORTHSIDE garage and walk in.Suite 110 on Rock Rose Avenue. Arrive ten minutes early for your first time and bring water.
  2. Warm up by walking and clapping on the beat.Finding the "one" in country music is the first skill, and the one people skip.
  3. Learn the core steps one at a time, slowly.Grapevine, heel dig, rock step and a pivot turn — no music yet, just counts.
  4. Chain the steps into one short 32-count sequence. This is the whole dance. Most line dances are only 32 counts long.
  5. Add the quarter turn and dance it to all four walls. The turn is what makes it a line dance — and the step most people lose at a bar.
  6. Dance the full routine to music at real tempo.Twice through, then once more with nobody counting. That's your first line dance.

Three Line Dances in One Minute

The Macarena, the Cotton-Eyed Joe and the Electric Slide, back to back, in sixty seconds. Watch it once and notice two things. The steps repeat — the same handful of moves in a different order. And it goes by fast.

That speed is exactly what a free lesson on a busy floor feels like: a dance shown once, at tempo, and then the music starts. In class we slow each one down, count it, fix it, and build it back up — so the next time you see this at full speed, you're in it.

Meet Your Austin Line Dance Team

A line dance class lives or dies on whether the person at the front can break a sequence into pieces a beginner can hold. Diego was born and raised in Colombia and brings more than fifteen years of experience as a teacher, competitor, performer and choreographer. He trained in acrobatic gymnastics and was a high-performance athlete in soccer, swimming and cycling before dance took over.

What he teaches

A salsa champion, experienced in tricks, salsa on1, salsa on2, salsa Caleña, sensual and traditional bachata, and Argentine tango. That range is why couples get handed to him when the song doesn't fit a neat category.

Competition

He has competed nationally and internationally — Colombia, Panama and Puerto Rico, and in Miami, Oklahoma, New York, New Jersey, Atlanta, Houston and Chicago.

On wedding couples

His stated aim is creating life long memories on the dance floor, which is as close to a first-dance brief as it gets. Reviews are consistent on two points: it's fun, and nobody is made to feel behind.

Why Choose Dance With Me for Line Dancing in Austin

A Class, Not a Drop-In

A fixed weekly time and a curriculum that builds, week on week. Every other line dance option in Austin is drop-in — a different dance each night and no one checking your feet.

A Real Studio Floor

A proper dance floor at our Domain NORTHSIDE studio with room to turn — not a corner of a bar at 10pm with the band warming up.

No 21+ Door, No Cover

Most honky-tonk lessons in Austin are 21 and over and start in the evening. Ours aren't in a bar, and private lessons run from 11 in the morning.

A World-Class Standard

Dance With Me was founded by Maksim and Valentin Chmerkovskiy and Tony Dovolani. Our Austin team is professional, competing and coached in-house — and hired for teaching beginners.

Published Prices, No Contracts

$49 to start, $30 a group class, and nothing you have to sign up for. Nobody in Austin publishes a line dance class price — we'd rather you knew before you came.

Good for You, Too

A class is an hour of steady moving that doesn't feel like exercise. Harvard Health reports that moderate-intensity dancing was linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular death.

No. Line dancing is danced on your own, in rows, to a fixed sequence that everyone performs together while facing the same wall. The Texas Two-Step is a partner dance: couples travel counter-clockwise around the outside of the floor, with one person leading. Most of the country dance lessons in Austin teach two-step. We teach both, and line dancing is the easier place to start because you don't need a partner.

Our beginner line dance class runs every month at our Domain NORTHSIDE studio. New students start with a private, one-on-one intro lesson first, so you join the group already knowing the core steps. Private line dance lessons are available any time the studio is open, from 11am on weekdays.

At Dance With Me Austin you start with a $49 private intro lesson. After that, a group class is $30, a practice party is $20, and a $199 social membership covers unlimited group classes and parties. Private lessons run $123 to $155 depending on the program. Across Austin, free dance-hall line dancing costs nothing and bar lessons usually run $5 to $15 plus cover.

No. Line dancing needs no partner at all — everyone dances their own steps in rows — and our beginner class assumes you have never danced before. Most people come on their own or with a friend. If you can walk in time to music, you can learn a full line dance in your first class.

Yes. Maverick's Dance Hall North in Pflugerville has free line dancing on Tuesday nights, and Wild West in Cedar Park runs line dance lessons on Thursday and Saturday evenings. They are a great night out, but they are drop-in: one dance, taught once, at tempo, often in a 21+ venue. A studio class breaks each dance down and builds on it week to week.

Not at our studio. Many of Austin's dance-hall lessons are held in 21+ bars in the evening, but our classes are in a dance studio, so there is no 21+ door, no cover charge and no drink minimum. If you are under 18, call the studio at (512) 672-8222 before booking and we will talk you through it.

Most beginners dance their first complete line dance in their first class. Most line dances are only 32 counts built from the same handful of steps, so learning the steps is the real work. After a few weeks of classes you start recognizing the pieces, and new dances go from something you memorize to something you pick up by watching one rotation.

Wear comfortable clothes you can move in and shoes with smooth or leather soles so you can turn. Cowboy boots are ideal, so bring them if you have them. Avoid rubber-soled sneakers and flip-flops, which grip the floor and make pivot turns hard on your knees.

For line dancing specifically, the main nights are Tuesday at Maverick's Dance Hall North in Pflugerville and Thursday and Saturday at Wild West in Cedar Park. Broken Spoke, The White Horse, Donn's Depot and Sagebrush are famous Austin dance halls, but the lessons they run are mostly two-step. Check each venue's calendar before you go, because nights change.

Yes. We run private group line dance sessions at the studio for bachelorettes, birthdays and corporate teams. Your group gets its own instructor and the floor to itself, and everyone learns two or three dances they can do by the end of the session. Tell us the group size and the date on the form and we will plan it with you.

Yes. “Austin” is also the name of a popular line dance, so a search for “Austin line dance” turns up tutorials for the dance as often as classes in the city. This page is about line dancing classes in Austin, Texas. If the dance called Austin is the one you want, tell your instructor at your intro lesson.
