Want to two-step at a Houston dance hall, a country wedding or RodeoHouston without staring at your feet? We teach the country two-step — the Texas partner dance — from your very first quick-quick-slow-slow to leading turns on a crowded floor. No partner and no experience needed: most students start with a $49 introductory private lesson and leave already dancing the basic.

Lessons happen at our Houston dance studio in the Heights, on the M-K-T campus off N. Shepherd Drive — a short drive from Downtown, Montrose and River Oaks — and part of the studio group founded by Maksim and Valentin Chmerkovskiy and Tony Dovolani. What we add that a quick lesson before the band starts can't: frame, a real lead and follow, and the floorcraft that makes a packed Friday night fun instead of stressful.

Where it started

Eric began at nine with a ballet folklórico group and refined the craft with the Tribal Rhythm DanceSport Team in high school.

Training

After graduating, Eric joined the cast of Viva! El Paso in 2013, trained with choreographers from Dancing with the Stars, and competed on the DanceSport team at New Mexico State University while studying ballroom there.

Teaching and competition

Eric now teaches, performs and competes with Dance With Me, has danced at numerous national competitions, and in 2023 won the Dance With Me National Championship in the Professional Rhythm division.

On the two-step

Rhythm dancing is a career spent on weight changes, timing and leading a partner through turns — the same mechanics the two-step runs on, from where the weight sits on the slow steps to signalling a turn that lands back in the basic.

How Much Are Two-Step
Lessons in Houston?

Short answer: a two-step lesson at a Houston dance hall is usually free with cover, introductory private lessons at studios run from about $15 to $50, group classes about $20 to $35, and ongoing private lessons about $120 to $155. At Dance With Me you start with a $49 introductory private lesson, with no contract attached. Here's the whole market, then our own rate card.

Being straight about it: $49 isn't the cheapest two-step in Houston. Dance-hall lessons are free, and at least one country studio advertises a $15 first lesson. What $49 buys is a private lesson with a ballroom-trained instructor who teaches you a real frame, a real lead and follow and a first turn — inside the Loop, with free parking. We'd rather compete on what you can do at the end of it than on the price of the first hour.

What Happens in Your First
Two-Step Lesson (Partner Optional)

One instructor and you — or you and your partner, if you're coming as a couple. Here is the whole thing.

  1. You park free at M-K-T and come up to Suite 405

Building 4 on the M-K-T Heights campus, with on-site parking — no circling the Heights. Wear boots if you have them; smooth-soled shoes are fine too.

  2. We ask where you want to dance

A Friday at a honky-tonk, RodeoHouston, a country wedding or date night each asks for something slightly different. Two minutes of this shapes every lesson after it.

  3. Frame and hold — how a lead actually works

Where the hands go, where the weight goes, and how a leader signals through the frame instead of pushing or pulling. Followers learn to read it; nobody has to guess.

  4. The basic: quick-quick-slow-slow, travelling forward

First to a count, then to a slow country song, then to one at dance-hall tempo. Moving around the room is the point — the two-step is a travelling dance.

  5. Your first turn, led and followed

A simple underarm turn that lands back in the basic without losing the count. It's the moment most people realise this is going to be fun.

  6. You two-step a full song, start to finish

Not an exercise — a whole song, basic and turn, around the floor. Then we tell you honestly what comes next and how many lessons your goal will take.

07 The Dance Itself The plain answer first — then the three dances beginners mix up.

What Is the Country Two-Step?

The country two-step — often called the Texas two-step — is a traveling partner dance done to country music. Couples move counter-clockwise around the floor, along the "line of dance", using a quick-quick-slow-slow rhythm, with the leader guiding turns and the follower responding. It is the standard partner dance at Texas dance halls, from Houston honky-tonks to RodeoHouston.

The one you came for

Country Two-Step (Texas Two-Step)

Two names, one dance. The basic is a walk with a rhythm to it: two quick steps, two slow steps, travelling forward around the room while the couples around you do the same. Some teachers count it slow-slow-quick-quick — same steps, different starting point. The leader steers, the follower travels mostly backward, and every turn, promenade and spin sits on top of that walk. Played on up-tempo country, it is the dance you will see on every Houston dance-hall floor.

The slow-song cousin

Nightclub Two-Step

A different dance that shares a name. Nightclub two-step is danced to slow ballads — pop or country — mostly in place, rocking side to side with a slow, quick-quick rhythm. It is lovely for a slow song or a wedding first dance, but it does not travel, so it is not what the floor is doing when a George Strait song kicks in.

Same floor, different shape

Country Swing

The other partner dance on a Texas dance floor. Country swing stays roughly in one spot and lives on turns, wraps and pretzels rather than travelling around the room. Plenty of couples switch between the two in the same night, which is why we teach two-step first: its frame and lead are what make swing turns work later.

Your First Month: From First Lesson
to Dance-Hall Ready

The basic takes a lesson. Being comfortable on a busy Houston floor takes a little longer, because the hard part isn't your feet — it's everyone else's. Most of our students feel ready for their first dance-hall night after roughly four to six lessons, depending on how much they practise in between. Here is what happens along the way.

Stage 1 · Lesson 1

The basic and the frame

  • Quick-quick-slow-slow to real country music
  • Closed position — where your hands and weight go
  • Travelling forward without looking down
  • Your first turn, led and followed

You leave dancing the basic to a full song. This is what the $49 intro covers.

Stage 2 · Lessons 2–3

Around the room

  • The line of dance — counter-clockwise, and why
  • Promenade and side-by-side positions
  • Underarm turns for both partners
  • Tempo changes from a slow two-step to a fast one

Leaders learn to steer; followers learn to travel backward with confidence.

Stage 3 · Lessons 4–6

Floorcraft

  • The passing lane — faster couples outside, slower inside
  • Steering into gaps instead of stopping dead
  • Turns on a crowded floor without collisions
  • Recovering when you lose the count

The part a free lesson before the band never gets to — and the part that makes the night fun.

Stage 4 · Your first night out

Practice, then the dance hall

  • A $20 practice party at the studio first
  • Pick a lesson night at a Houston dance hall
  • Go early, while the floor is still roomy
  • Stay for the country waltz — we'll teach you that too

Dance-Hall Lesson or Studio Lesson?
An Honest Comparison

Yes — some Houston dance halls teach a two-step lesson before the dancing starts, and you should go. It's a great taste and a good night out. What it isn't is a classroom: one short lesson, on a floor that's filling up, taught at the pace of a crowd, and often a different dance the next week. That's what a lesson before a night out is for. It's also why people who've been to a few still freeze when a packed floor starts moving.

The honest summary: go to the dance-hall lessons for the night out, and take lessons if you want to actually lead, follow and move around a busy floor. The two aren't in competition — getting you onto those floors with confidence is the whole point of learning.

10 Before Your First Lesson Two short tips from our team — both things the two-step is built on.

Lead, Follow
and Look Like You Mean It

These two aren't two-step tutorials — they're the two things the two-step is built on. The first is lead and follow: how a leader signals a move through the hold and how a follower reads it, shown here on a dip you can use at the end of a country wedding first dance.

The second is confidence — posture, where your eyes go, what to do with your nerves. On a Houston dance floor that matters as much as the steps: a couple who look sure of themselves get room, and a couple staring at their boots get bumped. Both are exactly what your first lesson works on.

From the Dance With Me team. More short tutorials on our YouTube channel.

11 After the Lessons The part most studios never mention, because it involves you leaving the building.

Where to Two-Step in Houston
Once You've Learned

Lessons aren't the point. The point is the night a George Strait song comes on, the floor starts moving counter-clockwise, and you go with it. Houston has some of the best dance halls in Texas to do that in. Here's where to start, as of September 2026 — schedules move, so check with the venue before you drive out.

Spring Branch

Neon Boots Dancehall & Saloon

The historic former Esquire Ballroom on Hempstead Highway, and the room most Houstonians mean by "a real dance hall". A two-step lesson on the first Tuesday of the month and country dancing on Friday evenings. 21 and over.

Montrose

Goodnight Charlie's

An intown honky-tonk with live country music, and the closest two-step floor to our studio. Smaller and friendlier than the big halls — a good first night out once you have the basic and a turn.

Southwest Houston

Wild West

A big-floor country club off Richmond Avenue, southwest of the Galleria. Lots of room to travel, which makes it forgiving for newer two-steppers — go early, before the floor fills.

North Houston

Stampede Houston

A large dance hall up on the Eastex Freeway. Friday nights start with free line dancing on the second floor (18+), so it's an easy place to mix two-step and line dances in one night.

Southwest Freeway

Firehouse Saloon

A long-running live-country bar where the band sets the tempo. Good practice for adjusting your two-step between slower and faster songs — Stage 2 of the roadmap.

Further Out

Big Texas & Buck Wild

Big Texas Dance Hall up in Spring and Buck Wild down in Clear Lake are worth the drive once you're comfortable — bigger floors, bigger crowds and a proper dance-hall Saturday night.

Getting Ready for RodeoHouston

Every late winter the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo takes over NRG Park, and the city goes country for weeks — which is exactly when most Houstonians decide they'd like to be able to two-step. Start in January and six weeks is plenty to go from nothing to dancing comfortably at the rodeo's after-parties and every honky-tonk around it. Check the official dates each year before you plan backwards from them.

One piece of advice for your first night out: go early, while the floor is still roomy. Dance the outside lane only if you're keeping pace; slower couples and anyone practising a turn belong nearer the middle. If you lose the count, keep walking the line of dance and pick the basic back up — stopping dead is the one thing that causes pile-ups. Our $20 practice parties exist precisely so your first try isn't here.

13 The Difference

Why Houston Learns
to Two-Step Here

Dance With Me was founded by Maksim and Valentin Chmerkovskiy of Dancing With The Stars and Tony Dovolani. That isn't the reason to book a two-step lesson — it's the reason the teaching is what it is. These four are the reasons to book.

The short version: a crash lesson teaches you the basic. We teach you to lead, follow and move around a crowded Houston floor like you belong there — which is the part that makes the night fun.

Floorcraft, Not Just Footwork

The line of dance, the passing lane, steering into gaps and turning without a collision. Nobody else teaching two-step in Houston explains floorcraft in any depth, and it's the difference between surviving a Friday and enjoying it.

A Real Lead and Follow

Our instructors are trained partner dancers, so you learn a proper frame — the leader signals, the follower reads, nobody shoves anyone. It's why our students look smooth on the floor, and why swing and waltz come easily later.

Inside the Loop, Free Parking

600 N Shepherd Drive at M-K-T Heights, minutes off I-10. Most of Houston's big dance halls are out along the highways; we're ten minutes from Downtown, Montrose and River Oaks, with dinner on the same campus.

14 Questions, Answered Everything people ask before their first two-step lesson — including the one about the free lessons.

Country Two-Step Lessons in Houston — Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The basic is a walk in a quick-quick-slow-slow rhythm, and most beginners are dancing it within their first one or two lessons. What takes a few weeks is the rest: smooth turns, a clear lead and follow, and the floorcraft to move around a busy Houston dance floor without bumping anyone.

No. In a private lesson your instructor is your partner, so you can come on your own and learn to lead or follow in a real hold. In group classes partners rotate. Couples are welcome too, and learning together is one of the most popular ways in.

At Dance With Me Houston the introductory private lesson is $49. After that, private lessons are $123 to $155, group classes are $30, practice parties are $20, and a $199 social membership covers unlimited group classes and parties. Dance-hall lessons are usually free with cover, and some studios advertise first lessons from $15.

Most students feel comfortable on a Houston dance-hall floor after roughly four to six lessons, depending on how much they practise in between. You will dance the basic after the first lesson; the extra lessons build turns, tempo changes and floorcraft, and a practice party or two makes the first night out much easier.

Yes. Texas two-step and country two-step, sometimes called country western two-step, are two names for the same traveling partner dance: quick-quick-slow-slow, moving counter-clockwise around the floor. Whichever name you search for, it is the dance you will see at every Houston dance hall and at RodeoHouston.

They are different dances that share a name. The Texas two-step travels around the floor to up-tempo country with a quick-quick-slow-slow rhythm. The nightclub two-step is danced mostly in place to slow ballads, with a slow, quick-quick rhythm. Learn the Texas two-step first; nightclub two-step is a lovely addition for slow songs and weddings.

Our group schedule rotates month to month, so country styles come around in the lineup rather than on one fixed night. Private two-step lessons are available any week, which is how most students build the basics, and the front desk can tell you what is on the group schedule this month.

You do not need boots, but they are ideal, so bring the pair you plan to dance in. Otherwise wear comfortable clothes and shoes with smooth soles that let you turn. Avoid rubber-soled sneakers, which grip the floor and fight every turn. Bring water. That is the whole dress code.

Dance With Me Houston is at 600 N Shepherd Drive, Suite 405, Houston, TX 77007, in Building 4 on the M-K-T Heights campus. We are open Monday through Friday from 12 PM to 9 PM and Saturday from 12 PM to 6 PM, and closed Sunday. Parking at M-K-T is free, and we are minutes off I-10.

Yes. We choreograph two-step first dances, slower nightclub two-step routines with a dip at the end, and simple two-step for the wedding party so everyone can stay on the floor when the reception turns country. Tell us your song and your date in your intro lesson and we will plan backwards from it.

Neon Boots in Spring Branch is the classic Houston dance hall, and Goodnight Charlie's in Montrose is the closest two-step floor to our studio. Wild West, Stampede Houston and Firehouse Saloon are also popular, with Big Texas Dance Hall and Buck Wild further out. Schedules change monthly, so check with each venue first.

Completely. Most people who book a two-step intro have never taken a dance lesson, and our Houston students range from their twenties into their eighties. The two-step is a walking dance, so it suits every age and fitness level, and a private first lesson means you set the pace.
