For anyone comparing studios near Southlake

Salsa at Dance With Me Southlake, in one read.

Dance With Me Southlake, at 290 Grand Avenue in Southlake Town Square, teaches salsa two ways: beginner-friendly group classes on weeknight evenings, set on a new calendar every month, and private salsa lessons Monday to Friday from 12 PM to 9:30 PM. No partner or experience is needed, and new students start with a $49 intro — one private lesson plus a group class or a practice party. We have taught on the Square since January 2016.

What is salsa? A Latin partner dance built on a quick-quick-slow rhythm: you step on counts 1-2-3 and 5-6-7 and pause on 4 and 8. Beginners here learn On1 timing first — the easiest to hear and the one most people dance socially around DFW — then add turns, shines and On2.

Group calendar changes monthly · privates follow studio hours

A new salsa calendar every month.

Our group classes rotate styles and nights so there is always something new to learn — which means the salsa class isn’t pinned to one weekday. Private salsa lessons are the fixed point: book any slot Monday to Friday, 12 PM to 9:30 PM.

  1. Check this month’s calendar

Salsa group-class nights and times are posted on the Southlake studio schedule at the start of each month.

  2. Or just ask us

Call (817) 251-1444 or send the form — we’ll tell you the next beginner-friendly salsa class and hold your spot.

  3. Start any weekday with a private

Your $49 intro private lesson can be booked right away, so you never wait for the next group night to begin.

03Your First Night

About 45 minutes · nobody watching from the sidelines

What happens in your first salsa class.

Most people arrive a little nervous and leave having danced a basic to real music. Here is how the first visit runs:

  1. Park once, walk in

Free parking in the East Garage (1451 Federal Way) or on Grand Avenue. We’re right on the Square.

  2. Five minutes of hello

Tell us why you want to dance — a wedding, date night, a trip, or just something new — and we plan around it.

  3. The basic, counted out loud

Forward and back on 1-2-3, 5-6-7. We count until you can hear the rhythm in the music on your own.

  4. Your first turn and partner rotation

A right turn and a cross-body lead. In a group class partners rotate every few minutes, so you never sit out.

  5. A plan, no pressure

We show you what a realistic path looks like for your goal. Nothing to sign that day.

What to wear: clothes you can turn in and smooth-soled shoes (leather soles, character or dance shoes). Skip rubber-soled sneakers and lugged boots — they grip the floor and stop your spins. Block heels over stilettos. Want to preview the steps? Read how to dance salsa.

06Salsa Styles

Start On1 · add On2 when your basic is automatic

Which salsa will you learn? On1, On2 & Cuban.

Salsa’s three big families share the same music but feel different on the floor. The difference that matters most to a beginner is which beat you break on — the step where you change direction.

Where you start

On1 · LA style

Break forward on beat 1, in a straight “slot”. The easiest timing to hear, the one taught to every beginner here, and the style you’ll see most at DFW socials.

Next step

On2 · New York style

Same slot, but the break lands on beat 2 — smoother and closer to the conga rhythm. Its ballroom cousin is mambo. Added in private lessons once On1 is solid.

On request

Cuban · Casino

Circular rather than slotted, with partners rotating around each other and lots of arm wraps. Great for variety; we introduce the turn patterns in privates.

07Your Salsa Path

Typical pace with one class a week

From first night to social floor.

Progress depends on how often you dance, but this is the shape we see most with one group class a week plus the occasional private lesson or party.

Weeks 1–4

The basic, in time

Forward/back and side basics on 1-2-3, 5-6-7, a right turn and a cross-body lead. You start hearing the count in real songs.

Weeks 5–8

Turns that connect

Inside and outside turns, hand changes and simple combinations. Leads get clearer; follows stop anticipating.

Weeks 9–12

Your first social floor

Shines, basic styling and your first practice party. Most students feel ready to dance socially around here.

Month 4+

Pick your direction

On2, bachata and kizomba, styling, or a performance or wedding routine — privates tailor it.

10For Couples

Dinner, a lesson and a walk — one parking spot

Salsa for couples & date night on the Square.

It’s the most common reason couples come to us: an evening of learning something together that neither of you is already good at. Because the studio sits on Grand Avenue in Southlake Town Square, you can park once — dinner, a salsa lesson and a walk around the Square in the same trip.

Standing weekly slot

Plenty of couples from Southlake, Colleyville and Keller book the same private time every week and treat it as their night.

Different levels? Fine.

You don’t need to be equally good. Private lessons teach each of you your own part.

11Keep Going

One studio, the whole Latin ladder

Salsa is the start: bachata, kizomba & parties.

Salsa opens the door to the rest of the Latin floor. Because we are a full ballroom and Latin studio, you can move from salsa into bachata, kizomba, cha-cha or American Rhythm mambo without changing teachers — and put it all to use at our practice parties and Friday TGIF Roulette, where a wheel picks the style.

Choosing between the two? Read salsa vs bachata.

On the monthly calendar

Bachata

Four-count rhythm, close connection and hip action. Many salsa students add it within a month.

Private lessons

Kizomba

A smooth Angolan partner dance built on walking footwork — taught almost nowhere else in the Metroplex.

Practice Parties

A real floor, real music, friendly partners. The bridge between class and a salsa night out.

14Questions

Ten things people ask before their first salsa class

Salsa class FAQs.

No. Most people who join our Southlake salsa class come on their own. In the group class we rotate partners every few minutes, so you dance with several people and nobody sits out. In a private lesson your instructor is your partner. If you come as a couple, you can rotate or stay together — your choice.

Salsa group classes run on weeknight evenings, but the nights change every month because our group calendar rotates styles. Check the current month on the Southlake studio schedule or call (817) 251-1444 and we will tell you the next beginner-friendly class. Private salsa lessons don’t wait for the calendar: book any slot Monday to Friday, 12 PM to 9:30 PM.

New students start with the $49 intro: one private lesson plus a group class or an invitation to a practice party. After that, a group class is $30, a practice party is $20, private lessons run $123–$155 depending on the program, and the Social Membership — unlimited group classes and parties — is $199. You are not asked to commit to anything on your first visit.

No. The salsa basic is six weight changes over eight counts — quick, quick, slow — and we count it out loud until you can hear it in the music yourself. Most beginners are stepping a basic in time within their first class. If you can walk to a beat, you can learn salsa.

Beginners start with On1 (LA style), where you break forward on the first beat. It is the easiest timing to hear and the one most people dance socially around DFW. Once your basic is automatic, you can add On2 (New York style) in private lessons, and we can introduce Cuban-style turns as well.

With one group class a week plus the odd practice party, most students feel comfortable on a social floor after two to three months. Adding a private lesson every week or two shortens that. Our practice parties exist for exactly this step: a real dance floor with friendly partners before you try a club.

Clothes you can move and turn in, and shoes with a smooth sole — leather-soled shoes, character shoes or dance shoes. Avoid rubber-soled sneakers and lugged boots, which grip the floor and stop your turns. Block heels are safer than stilettos. You don’t need to buy dance shoes to start.

Yes. A salsa or Latin-flavored first dance is choreographed in private lessons to your song, your dress and the size of your venue’s floor. Simple routines take five to seven lessons; a full routine with lifts or a surprise switch takes ten or more. Start three to four months out if you can.

Yes. Bachata has its own weekly group class, and many of our salsa students take both — bachata’s four-count rhythm is a good partner to salsa’s. We also teach kizomba, merengue and cha-cha in private lessons, and they come up in TGIF Roulette on Fridays.

Parking is free throughout Southlake Town Square. The East Garage at 1451 Federal Way is the closest covered option, and street parking along Grand Avenue usually opens up in the evening. We are 10 to 15 minutes from Colleyville, Keller, Grapevine, Trophy Club, Westlake and Roanoke.
