Popular Wedding Dance Styles in NYC
Choosing the right dance style depends entirely on your song choice and your personal vibe as a couple. Whether you want something deeply elegant or a bit more rhythmic, our instructors will match you with the perfect steps.
Some of the most requested styles for a beginner wedding dance include:
Traditional Waltz
The ultimate classic. Perfect for sweeping ballads and grand ballrooms. It is smooth, romantic, and completely timeless.
Smooth Foxtrot
Ideal for jazzy tunes or Big Band classics (think Frank Sinatra or Michael Bublé). It offers a sophisticated, jazzy glide across the floor.
Romantic Bachata
Strictly for couples who want a Latin-inspired flair! Bachata is a sensual, rhythmic dance that pairs beautifully with modern Latin pop or romantic acoustic covers.
What is the best dance to learn for a wedding?
The Foxtrot is widely considered the best and most versatile dance to learn for a wedding. It features a smooth, walking-pace rhythm (slow-slow-quick-quick) that pairs beautifully with classic big band tunes, modern pop ballads, and standard love songs. Because it is easy to learn and looks effortlessly elegant, it is the perfect “go-to” for couples with no prior dance experience.
However, the truly “best” dance depends on your specific wedding song and vibe. Here is a quick breakdown of the top wedding dance styles:
The Foxtrot (Best All-Rounder): Ideal for classic, timeless songs (e.g., Frank Sinatra, Michael Bublé). It covers a lot of ground on the dance floor and looks incredibly polished.
The Rumba (Best for Slow, Romantic Pop): Perfect for modern ballads (e.g., Ed Sheeran, John Legend). It is a stationary, sensual dance that focuses on hip movement and close connection, making it great for smaller dance floors.
The Waltz (Best for Traditional Elegance): The quintessential fairytale wedding dance. Written in $3/4$ time, it features a distinct “rise and fall” motion that works beautifully with orchestral music or classic waltzes.
The Nightclub Two-Step (Best for Beginners): If you are short on time and your song has a slow, contemporary rhythm, this style is incredibly easy to pick up. It rescues couples from the dreaded “high school sway” while keeping things relaxed.

How much do wedding dance lessons cost in NYC?
We offer a Wedding First Dance Consultation for $49.
We customize memorable and impressive routines to the music and dance style of your choice. Each plan is tailored to fit your needs based on your schedule, budget, and expectations for your first dance. Let us help make your big day that much more special! Call us to schedule your 45 minute consultation!
How soon before a wedding should you take dance lessons?
We strongly recommend starting 3 to 6 months before your wedding date.
How many dance lessons do you need for a wedding?
Every student is unique. But if you just want to avoid awkward swaying, 3 to 5 lessons are usually enough to learn basic timing, a simple entrance, and a memorable dip. For a fully choreographed, picture-perfect routine, most couples take 10 to 15 lessons.
What should we wear to our lessons?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. For the first few lessons, normal street shoes are fine. As you get closer to the big day, we highly recommend practicing in the actual shoes you will wear at the wedding to ensure complete comfort!
Do you offer dance lessons for weddings?
Yes. Dance With Me provides private choreography sessions for weddings and special events, creating routines tailored to your song and style.
What is the best dance to learn for a wedding?
