01The Problem

Most NYC Couples Wait Too Long. Then Panic.

You've booked the venue — a Tribeca rooftop, Gotham Hall, The Foundry out in Long Island City, a loft in DUMBO. You have the dress, the photographer, the band. But the first dance? You're "just going to wing it." Here's why that rarely works:

a.

The "Awkward Sway"

Without a plan, you end up rocking back and forth for three minutes while your guests check their phones. The photos look stiff. The memory feels embarrassing.

b.

Every Guest Is Filming

In the age of TikTok and Instagram Stories, your first dance isn't just a moment — it's content. One awkward step becomes a video that lives forever.

c.

The Dress, and a Downtown-Sized Floor

That gown wasn't designed for dancing, and a Manhattan loft or restaurant buyout gives you a fraction of the floor a ballroom would. Without choreography scaled to the actual space, you risk stepping on the train, clipping a column — or spending the whole song staring at your feet.

d.

No Room to Rehearse

You can't practice a first dance between the couch and the radiator. Couples who plan to "figure it out at home" arrive at the wedding having never once run the song end to end on a real floor. Private dance lessons exist for exactly this.

e.

Then the Floor Opens Up

At a New York reception the party belongs to everyone — a hora, a merengue set, the bachata your cousins have been dancing since they could walk. If you never learned to lead and follow, you spend your own wedding at the head table watching.

02The Cost of Waiting

The First Dance Is the One Photo You'll Frame Forever.

Framed Fort Worth wedding first dance photograph hanging above a console table
0+Students Taught

There's a version of this photograph that hangs in your hallway, and on your parents' mantel, for the next fifty years — and a version that never leaves the camera roll. Four minutes of music decides which one you get. The lights drop, the room goes quiet, every phone in it comes up at once, and you either move like two people who have done this before — or you spend the whole song counting in your head, waiting for it to end.

03The Solution

How wedding dance lessons work at Dance With Me SoHo.

Our SoHo Wedding Dance Package isn't about becoming a pro. It's about feeling natural, connected, and confident for three minutes. Adam, Courtney and the DWM SoHo team choreograph to your comfort level — whether that's a romantic sway with one clean spin, a slow rumba, or a full entrance that stops the room.

06Why Us

Why NYC Couples Choose Dance With Me SoHo.

Founded on a World-Class Ballroom Standard

Dance With Me was founded by Maks and Val Chmerkovskiy. Your instructor is coached to that standard — and then points it at one thing: feeling confident for three minutes on your wedding day, not competition drills.

Instructors Hired to Teach Beginners

Our SoHo team is selected for teaching ability, not only performance credits. About 90% of the wedding couples we work with have never taken a formal dance lesson, and every program here is built for exactly that.

SoHo Studio, With Midtown as a Backup

Train at 676 Broadway, 4th Floor, two blocks from Broadway–Lafayette — or move a session to Dance With Me Midtown when that's closer to work. Both sit on our New York studios roster.

Competitive career — Melbourne to Blackpool

Adam is originally from Melbourne, Australia and has been dancing for over 35 years. He began as a very young student of Wenden Dance Studio under the renowned Australian coach Don Mc Robert JP, FISTD (London), FFATD (Australia). What started as social dancing turned competitive when Adam paired with his sister Patricia. They won first in the Juvenile section, then the Junior, and eventually the adult amateur section, working their way through the competitive system and winning many events conducted by various organizations.

The pair reached the highest level in Australia, winning the country’s most prestigious event — The Federal Association Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Commemorative 10 Dance Championship Trophy, contested as part of the South Pacific Championship. Following that success they travelled to Asia on several occasions, taking the Bangkok and Taipei International Championships.

Having won at the highest level in Australia, Adam and his partner moved to London to train and compete with some of the top coaches and dancers in the world. They competed at a world-class standard across England and Europe, eventually reaching the world-famous Blackpool Dance Festival — the most prestigious competition on the Latin and ballroom circuit. During their time in England the couple were ranked among the top 60 couples in the world.

Stage, screen and television

After a long and successful competitive career Adam moved into live performance, theatre and television. He appeared in the television series True Blood and co-choreographed the musical film Rent, working alongside Idina Menzel. Theatre highlights include the Joyful Noise tour with Clay Aiken, the American Idol runner-up of 2003, followed by the resident production of Simply Ballroom at the Golden Nugget Hotel in Las Vegas and a long, successful American tour of the same show, which was joined by the legendary Debbie Reynolds.

In 2010 Adam was thrilled to be asked to join the original television cast of Dance Star Asia, Singapore’s version of Dancing with the Stars. His celebrity partner was Lina Teoh, a former Miss Malaysia, and the pair placed second overall. Adam was also consistently employed by Crystal Cruises, the world’s only six-star cruise line. For over ten years he and his partner were invited aboard as guest entertainers and dance instructors, performing their own 45-minute show and teaching private and group lessons on board — one of the ships’ most popular and most requested acts.

Teaching and coaching

Before joining Dance With Me, Adam taught in London at Karen Hardy Dance Studios, the city’s only private members’ dance studio, and competed in pro-am competitions all over the world. He later joined Dance With Me at the Galleria studio in Houston before moving to New York.

His students have been finalists in almost every competition they have entered. Adam was named Top Teacher three years in a row at the Killick Royal Championships, in the same years Karen Hardy Studios was named top studio. He also won Top Teacher at the New York Dance Festival and placed second at the Miami Killick Classic.

08Common Questions

Everything You Need to Know.

No — and most couples who walk in here don't have any. Around 90% of our wedding couples have never taken a dance lesson. Our SoHo instructors break movement into simple, repeatable steps that feel natural rather than robotic, so you're not memorising a routine you'll forget under the lights.

You start with a $49 intro private lesson at our SoHo studio. After that, most couples book a small package of 3–5 private lessons; your instructor prices a program around your song, your timeline and how much choreography you want. There's no obligation beyond the intro lesson.

Most couples are comfortable and camera-ready after 3 to 5 private lessons. That's enough for a simple, elegant routine you can actually relax into. A longer piece — a dip, a lift, a surprise style change halfway through — usually takes a few more.

Three to four weeks before the wedding is the sweet spot — enough time to learn it, practise it and feel confident, without adding one more thing to an already busy month. That said, we've had couples start two days out and still pull off a beautiful first dance.

Yes — the routine is built around your track, not fitted to a template. A classic ballad, a Sinatra standard, a Spanish-language first dance, a surprise hip-hop mashup: we choreograph to the structure and emotion of your particular song. Bring it to your intro lesson and we'll map it out with you.

Whichever one fits your song — the music decides, not tradition. A slow ballad in 4/4 usually becomes a rumba or a foxtrot; a sweeping song in 3/4 becomes a waltz; a Latin-flavoured track becomes bachata or salsa. Your instructor listens to your song at the intro lesson and recommends the style that suits it, and your comfort level.

Yes — father-daughter, mother-son, and group routines for the wedding party are all part of what we do, together with surprise flash mobs. Parents can book on their own, at whatever pace suits them, and group routines are kept simple enough that everyone can actually pull them off on the night.

Comfortable clothes and shoes with smooth soles. Brides should bring their wedding shoes to the final lesson so the routine is rehearsed at the heel height they'll actually be wearing, plus a practice skirt if the dress has volume. Avoid rubber-soled sneakers — they grip the floor too much to turn in.

We're at 676 Broadway, 4th Floor, New York, NY 10012, on the SoHo/NoHo border. The Broadway–Lafayette St / Bleecker St complex (B·D·F·M·6) is two blocks south, and 8th St–NYU (N·R·W) and Prince St (R·W) are a short walk either side.
