Amazing!! I hosted a group of friends here for my birthday, most of our first times ever trying a salsa class. Adam and Valencia understood the assignment! They were both patient and made our experience super special. Studio is beautiful. Can’t wait to be back!

While visiting a dear friend who takes lessons at this studio, she treated my daughter and me to a lesson with Steve. This man is the most incredible teacher. I taught school for 30 years and never reached a child as quickly as he reached my daughter and me. Within minutes he had us really believing we could be dancers. Such a positive, happy, supportive attitude! We learned dances and could actually put our steps to the music. I was amazed! It was just so much fun. Everyone at the studio was wonderful! Steve a wonderful teacher. Milos helped out and Katie was so nice and supportive. Loved the sweet girls at the front office!! I totally understand how my friend became so enamored with this studio and the world of dance. I cannot recommend a place more highly!!! 10 ⭐️s to you!! Thank you so much!

My life hasn't been the same since I stepped foot inside this studio. From the welcoming staff, the excellent service and warm environment - they make it a memorable experience here. Management really goes above and beyond to make sure they provide the best service and you genuinely form bonds here with your teachers and fellow students. Ballroom dancing can seem intimidating at first, but anyone can dance... you just have to take the first step! 🙂

Why New York City is the Epicenter of Swing Dancing

Taking swing dance lessons in NYC means you are directly tapping into a rich, culturally significant tradition. At Dance With Me SoHo, we honor American swing dance history while making it highly accessible for modern New Yorkers. You aren’t just learning steps; you are moving to the heartbeat of the city’s authentic jazz heritage, and we provide the premium instruction to get you moving confidently.

Lindy Hop vs. West Coast Swing: Finding Your Rhythm

When searching for swing dance lessons in NYC, you will quickly notice that “swing” is an umbrella term. We teach multiple variations at Dance With Me SoHo, but the two most popular styles are completely different in their music, mechanics, and vibe. To ensure you enroll in the right program, let’s break down the core differences.

Lindy Hop & East Coast Swing: The Vintage Big Band Vibe

Lindy Hop is the granddaddy of all swing dances. It is a highly energetic, rotational dance that utilizes both 6 and 8-count patterns alongside fast-paced footwork. If you want to dance to classic jazz tunes, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and upbeat big band music, Lindy Hop is your match.

For absolute beginners, we often start with East Coast Swing, a slightly simplified 6-count foundational dance that gets you moving to the music immediately. Both styles have a joyful, bouncy aesthetic that encourages playfulness and vintage style.

West Coast Swing (WCS): The Modern, Improvisational Groove

In stark contrast, West Coast Swing (WCS) is characterized by a smooth, elastic, and linear movement (often called “slotting”). Instead of vintage jazz, WCS is primarily danced to contemporary music—think modern R&B, hip-hop, blues, pop, and acoustic tracks.

It is a highly improvisational dance that feels incredibly conversational between the leader and follower. If you want a style that you can dance to whatever is playing on the radio today, West Coast Swing is the sleek, modern groove you are looking for. (Be sure to ask about our dedicated West Coast Swing Bootcamps and Whip-ology workshops!)

What to Expect at Your First NYC Swing Lesson (No Partner Required)

Taking your first steps onto a hardwood floor can feel intimidating, but the Dance With Me SoHo community is famously welcoming. Let’s demystify the actual studio experience so you can focus on having fun.

FAQ: dance lessons for couples

Absolutely not! No partner needed is the golden rule of our studio and the broader social dance community. In our group classes and social dance events, rotating partners is standard practice. It is highly encouraged to show up solo.

At Dance With Me SoHo, you can start with a $49 Intro Special. Book your class today!

Right here at Dance With Me SoHo (676 Broadway). We host dedicated West Coast Swing bootcamps, “Whip-ology” workshops, and regular social parties specifically tailored for modern WCS dancers.

For absolute beginners, a structured but highly supportive environment is key. An introductory private lesson at Dance With Me SoHo is the absolute best way to learn the basic 6-count footwork without any pressure, followed by transitioning into our beginner-friendly group classes.

Yes! While rotating is the norm in most group classes, couples can absolutely take private lessons tailored specifically for them. A private session is a fantastic way for couples to enjoy an intimate, shared hobby without rotating partners, or to prepare a routine for a special event.

We usually recommend starting with social dancing basics like the Rumba, Salsa, or the Foxtrot. These styles teach fundamental rhythm and basic partner connection, making it easier to learn other styles later.

We recommend wearing comfortable clothing that doesn’t restrict your movement—think athletic wear or comfortable casual wear. Avoid overly tight skirts or stiff suits. For shoes, wear something comfortable with a smooth sole. You do not need professional dance shoes for your first lesson.

Yes. Dance With Me  provides private choreography sessions for weddings and special events, creating routines tailored to your song and style.

Yes, our Social Styles curriculum covers a wide variety of dances built for connection and rhythm, including Hustle and Bachata. (Whatever the style, our focus is always on making you feel confident and joyful on the floor).
