At Dance With Me Austin, beginners learn the basic step, lead-and-follow and simple turns in their very first lesson.

02Which bachata?Three styles, one basic step to start them all

Bachata styles we teach in Austin

Instructor and partner in a close bachata hold on the Dance With Me Austin studio floorShot at our Austin studio

Traditional (Dominican) bachata

The original. Danced mostly in a relaxed open or close hold with quick, playful footwork and syncopations that follow the requinto guitar and the bongo. Music and dance of Dominican bachata were inscribed by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2019.

Modern bachata

The style you will see most on Austin social floors: the side-to-side basic with more turns, shadow position and a few dips borrowed from salsa. The easiest style to take out dancing after a handful of lessons.

Sensual bachata

Slower and more fluid, built on body waves, circular upper-body movement and a closer connection. It rewards clean lead-and-follow, which is exactly where private lessons pay off.

Which should I start with?

All three share the same basic step, so you don't have to choose on day one. Most beginners learn the basic and a few modern turns first, then lean traditional or sensual. Diego teaches both, and our traditional vs sensual bachata guide goes deeper.

06 Who teaches you

Meet your Austin bachata instructors

Bachata is only as good as the connection between two people, and that is what our team teaches first. Diego leads the bachata program, sensual and traditional; the rest of our Domain NORTHSIDE floor are professional ballroom and Latin dancers, which matters more than it sounds: the frame and posture that make a rumba look clean are the same ones that make a bachata lead easy to follow.

His stated aim is creating life long memories on the dance floor. Reviews are consistent on two points: it’s fun, and nobody is made to feel behind.

What to expect at your first bachata class

Instructor adjusting a beginner's frame during her first lesson at the Austin studioYour first lesson
  1. Arrive at Domain NORTHSIDE. We're at 11600 Rock Rose Ave, Suite 110, with free parking nearby. Come a few minutes early.
  2. Take the tour. A quick look around the floor and a chat about what you want from bachata: social nights, a wedding, date night, or just fun.
  3. Learn the basic. Side to side, eight counts, a tap on 4 and 8. Most beginners are dancing the basic step within the first 20 to 30 minutes.
  4. Add lead and follow. Your instructor dances with you, so you feel the connection from day one, then you add a first turn.
  5. Get your path. We recommend the next step for your goals: more privates, Social Latin 101, a practice party, or all three.

What to wear: comfortable clothes and smooth-soled shoes; avoid grippy sneakers. Dance shoes are available at the studio. Want a head start? Read how to dance bachata.

Beginner

Your first steps

The side-to-side basic, basic in place, the forward-and-back box, the tap on 4 and 8, closed and open hold, and your first right and left turns. Enough to dance a full song at a practice party.

Intermediate

Connection & flow

Cleaner lead and follow, shadow position, hand changes, your first body waves and dips, and simple Dominican footwork. This is where you choose your lean: traditional, modern or sensual.

Advanced

Musicality & styling

Dancing to the requinto guitar, bongo and güira instead of just the count, sensual technique, syncopated footwork, styling and combinations that work on any Austin social floor.

10The North Austin option

Bachata in North Austin: why structured lessons help

Most of Austin's bachata classes and socials happen south of the river. Dance With Me is the North Austin option: inside the Domain NORTHSIDE, a short drive for dancers in Round Rock, Cedar Park, Pflugerville, Leander and Georgetown.

Walking into a Latin social with no foundation turns the night into a spectator sport. Lessons fix that: a solid basic, a frame your partner can read and a few turns you trust. Our practice parties are the in-between step, a friendly room to try it all before you head out. Already dancing salsa? Our salsa classes in Austin use the same studio and many of the same instructors.

Private-lesson first

One-on-one bachata with a named, vetted instructor, not a crowded room where nobody sees your footwork.

FAQ: bachata classes in Austin

At Dance With Me Austin, 11600 Rock Rose Ave, Suite 110, Austin, TX 78758, inside the Domain NORTHSIDE. We teach private bachata lessons, a beginner Social Latin 101 group class and regular practice parties, a short drive from Round Rock, Cedar Park, Pflugerville, Leander and Georgetown.

New students start with a $49 package: one private lesson plus a group class or practice party. After that, group classes are $30, practice parties $20, private lessons $123 to $155 depending on your program, and the Social Membership with unlimited group classes and parties is $199.

No. Your instructor dances with you in private lessons, and group classes rotate partners so everyone dances. Couples are welcome to stay together if they prefer.

No. The basic step is four steps each way with a tap, and most beginners dance it within their first lesson. Smooth lead and follow takes a few weeks of practice, which is what private lessons and practice parties are for.

Both. Our lead bachata instructor, Diego Gallego, teaches sensual and traditional bachata. Beginners start with the basic step and simple turns, which all styles share, then choose the direction they enjoy most.

Most beginners find bachata easier because the rhythm is steady and the basic step is simple. Many of our students start with bachata and add salsa next; our salsa versus bachata guide compares the two.

Private bachata lessons can be booked any time the studio is open: Monday to Friday 11 AM to 9:30 PM and Saturday 9 AM to 3 PM, closed Sunday. The Social Latin 101 group class runs on a weeknight evening set on the studio's monthly calendar, so call 512.672.8222 for this month's night.

Comfortable clothes and smooth-soled shoes. Avoid grippy sneakers, which stick to the floor when you turn. Dance shoes are available at the studio.

Yes. We choreograph bachata first dances in private lessons, built around your song, your timeline and your comfort level. Bring your song to the $49 intro and your instructor will map out a plan.

Start at our in-studio practice parties, where you dance with classmates on real music in a low-pressure room. Once you are comfortable, Austin has Latin socials most nights of the week, and your instructor can point you to the ones that suit your level.

Still deciding between dances? Read salsa versus bachata, or just ask us at your intro lesson.
