Salsa Styles We Teach — On1, On2 & More

Salsa is not just one dance style. It has evolved into several distinct forms, each with its own rhythm and personality. At Dance With Me, our instructors teach the styles most commonly danced in Metroplex social scene.

LA-Style Salsa (On1)

Often called On1, this is the most common style taught in beginner salsa classes and seen at clubs and social events. The dancer “breaks” on the first beat of the music, creating an energetic and flowing style that’s easy to learn and highly social.

Most beginners start with On1 because it provides a clear structure and quickly builds confidence on the dance floor.

New York-Style Salsa (On2)

On2 salsa shifts the timing so the break step happens on the second beat of the music.

This style is often considered more musical and rhythm-focused, and many experienced social dancers prefer it.

While beginners usually start with On1, students who continue training often explore On2 to deepen their musicality and technique.

Cuban / Casino Style

Cuban salsa, also known as Casino, emphasizes circular movement and group interaction. While it’s less common in Atlanta social venues, it’s part of salsa’s historical roots and influences many modern styles.

What’s the difference between salsa On1 and On2?

On1 breaks on the first beat of the music and is the most common beginner style in clubs and studios. On2 breaks on the second beat and emphasizes musical interpretation and rhythm. Both use similar steps — the difference lies in timing and feel.

FAQ – Salsa Classes in Las Vegas

No, a partner is absolutely not required. The vast majority of our adult students sign up as individuals. In our group sessions, we maintain a structured rotation system to ensure everyone gets equal time dancing. If you book a private lesson, your professional instructor will be your partner, providing direct physical feedback so you can feel exactly how a proper lead or follow should function.

We recommend wearing comfortable, breathable clothing that allows for a full range of motion. For footwear, avoid heavy sneakers with thick rubber soles, as they grip the wood too tightly and can cause joint strain during turns. Instead, choose smooth leather-soled shoes, sleek flats, or professional dance heels that allow you to glide and pivot effortlessly across the floor.

Every person is unique, so you can learn faster or with more reps. Most students see a noticeable shift in their confidence within a 4-to-8 week progressive curriculum. Within this timeframe, you will master the basic transition steps, fundamental right and left turns, and cross-body leads, giving you a functional vocabulary to navigate an entire song comfortably.

At Dance With Me Summerlin, you can start with a $49 Intro Special for your first class.

We highly encourage our students to test their skills in the wild! Beyond our internal social parties, you can visit local Latin clubs, lounges, and weekend events across Las Vegas.

Research shows ballroom dancing benefits people of all ages. Neurological studies from Harvard suggest it may be one of the most effective activities for cognitive health as we age. Our oldest students are in their 70s and 80s; age is not a barrier, it is an asset.

  • Salsa On1 (LA Style): This approach breaks forward sharply on the very first beat of the musical measure ($1$). It is highly linear, visually dramatic, explosive, and features rapid, theatrical spin sequences. Because it lines up with the strongest structural beat in the music, it is incredibly intuitive for beginners to pick up and dominates the dance floors of most commercial clubs on the Las Vegas Strip.

  • Salsa On2 (NY Style / Mambo): This style breaks on the second beat of the measure ($2$). It is historically celebrated for its smooth, fluid, and jazzy cadence. Instead of fighting the music, On2 dancers align their movements precisely with the underlying percussion instruments, such as the conga drum. While it requires a slightly sharper ear for musicality, it is the preferred style for advanced social dancers and purists worldwide.
