FAQ

No! Most people who walk into our Greenvale studio come on their own. In private lessons your instructor is your partner. In group classes we rotate partners through the hour, so you dance with several people and never sit out. If you do come as a couple, you're welcome to rotate or stay together for the whole class.
No. Many students at Dance With Me Long Island have never taken a dance lesson in their lives, and our beginner classes are built assuming exactly that. Classes labeled Newcomers or All Levels on our schedule start from the very first step: how to hold your frame, how to hear the beat, how to move with someone else. There's no audition, no prior experience assumed, and no one watching from the sidelines.
New students start with our $49 intro special. We offer private and group lessons with different packages. We'll walk you through the options in person rather than pushing you into a contract on day one.
Wear something you can move and sweat in like leggings, slacks, a skirt that moves, or jeans with some give. For shoes, the rule is smooth sole: leather-soled dress shoes, character shoes, or proper dance shoes all work. Avoid rubber-soled sneakers, because they grip the floor and stop your feet from turning, which is how ankles and knees get hurt. You don't need to buy dance shoes for your first lesson — plenty of students start in a pair of dress shoes from their closet and upgrade later.
Most people feel comfortable leading or following a basic step within three to four lessons, and can hold their own at a wedding or a social party after about six to eight weeks of consistent classes. Getting good at a style - real technique, styling, musicality - takes months to years, and that's the fun part. If you have a hard deadline like a wedding, tell us the date on your first visit and we'll build a plan backwards from it.
Start three to four months before the wedding if you can. That's enough time for 5–10 private lessons at a relaxed pace, which is where most couples land for a choreographed first dance. Four to six weeks still works for something simpler and elegant, and we've built beautiful routines on less. But the earlier you start, the more the lessons feel like a date night and the less they feel like one more item on the wedding checklist. Bring your song if you have one; if you don't, we'll help you choose in the first lesson.
Yes. We choreograph to your song, at your comfort level, and we handle the music editing and timing ourselves. Tell us about your venue and your dress: a long train, a small dance floor, or a tight bustle all change what choreography actually works on the night. We also choreograph father-daughter and mother-son dances, wedding party numbers, and full surprise routines if that's your style.
Both. Alongside American Smooth, American Rhythm, International Standard and International Latin, we teach the social styles Long Island actually dances: salsa, bachata, hustle, swing, merengue and cha-cha. Our current group schedule includes Hustle in particular has deep roots on Long Island, and it's one of the most useful styles to know at a local wedding or catering hall.
We're at 27 Glen Cove Road, Greenvale, NY 11548, right on the Roslyn / Glen Cove line in Nassau County. There is a free, dedicated on-site parking lot directly at the venue for all students, making it easy to find a spot before our busy evening classes. We're roughly 5 to 10 minutes from Roslyn, Glen Head, Old Westbury, Brookville and Locust Valley, 15 to 20 minutes from Manhasset, Great Neck, Port Washington and Syosset, and the Greenvale LIRR station on the Oyster Bay Branch is just 2 minutes away on foot. Your first visit is about 45 minutes to an hour. You'll sit down with an instructor for a few minutes to talk about why you want to dance — a wedding, a hobby, a fitness goal, meeting people — then you'll get on the floor and actually dance, usually learning a basic step in one or two styles. At the end we'll show you what a realistic plan looks like for your goal. No performance, no audition, no obligation to sign anything that day.
Yes. Our students range from their twenties to their eighties, and ballroom is one of the few activities where that mix genuinely works. Classes are low-impact and self-paced, and our Body Conditioning & Stretching class is built specifically around balance, flexibility and body awareness rather than intensity. If you have a joint issue, a replacement, or anything else we should know, tell your instructor on day one and we'll adapt around it.
Yes. We choreograph for Sweet 16s, quinceañeras, anniversaries, corporate events and showcases — solo, with a partner, or with a full court. These are custom projects, so the number of lessons depends on the routine's complexity and the number of people involved.
