Salsa Styles We Teach — On1, On2 & More

Salsa is not just one dance style. It has evolved into several distinct forms, each with its own rhythm and personality. At Dance With Me, our instructors teach the styles most commonly danced in Metroplex social scene.

LA-Style Salsa (On1)

Often called On1, this is the most common style taught in beginner salsa classes and seen at clubs and social events. The dancer “breaks” on the first beat of the music, creating an energetic and flowing style that’s easy to learn and highly social.

Most beginners start with On1 because it provides a clear structure and quickly builds confidence on the dance floor.

New York-Style Salsa (On2)

On2 salsa shifts the timing so the break step happens on the second beat of the music.

This style is often considered more musical and rhythm-focused, and many experienced social dancers prefer it.

While beginners usually start with On1, students who continue training often explore On2 to deepen their musicality and technique.

Cuban / Casino Style

Cuban salsa, also known as Casino, emphasizes circular movement and group interaction. While it’s less common in Atlanta social venues, it’s part of salsa’s historical roots and influences many modern styles.

What’s the difference between salsa On1 and On2?

On1 breaks on the first beat of the music and is the most common beginner style in clubs and studios. On2 breaks on the second beat and emphasizes musical interpretation and rhythm. Both use similar steps — the difference lies in timing and feel.

Absolutely not! In fact, most beginners show up solo. Our group classes utilize a rotation system. Rotating partners helps you learn to lead or follow different people, which drastically improves your timing and adaptability on the social dance floor.

Dress comfortably in clothes that allow you to sweat and stretch. For footwear, avoid rubber-soled sneakers that grip the floor. Instead, opt for leather-soled shoes or low, supportive dance heels so you can execute your turns safely without stressing your knees.

In your Salsa classes in Fort Worth, you will likely hear terms like Salsa On1 / LA Style and On2 / NY Style. LA Style (On1) breaks forward on the first beat of the music and is highly popular in Texas for its flashy, dynamic turns. NY Style (On2) breaks on the second beat, offering a smoother, more rhythmic feel. Our instructors typically start beginners with LA Style to help you master the basic 8-count beat before expanding your repertoire.

Both are fantastic! Salsa is generally faster and more energetic, while Bachata is slower and more grounded. Many of our students choose to learn both to be versatile at social events.

Yes. Dance With Me Buckhead provides private choreography sessions for weddings and special events, creating routines tailored to your song and style.

Salsa is ageless! We have students ranging from young adults to retirees. If you can walk, you can dance.
