What are swing dance lessons in Atlanta? Swing dance lessons in Atlanta teach partner dances from the swing era — East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing, and Lindy Hop — through group classes and private instruction. At Dance With Me in Buckhead, beginners start with no partner and no prior experience, and most students dance their first full song within one 45-minute lesson.

You don't need a partner. You don't need experience. You don't need rhythm you're confident about yet — that's the part we teach. Most students dance a full song by the end of their first 45-minute lesson.

Dance With Me was founded by Maksim and Valentin Chmerkovskiy, professional champions from Dancing With The Stars, and our Buckhead studio brings that same standard of instruction to Atlanta.

02 The Honest Version

Why Learn Swing
Dance in Atlanta

Atlanta has one of the most active swing scenes in the Southeast, and it has had one for decades. There are weekly socials running across the city — Lindy Hop nights on the Westside, Friday swing dances on the northeast side, Saturday club dances out toward Doraville and Alpharetta — plus the Atlanta Swing Classic, a national-level competition the city hosts every October.

What that means practically: what you learn on Tuesday, you can use on Friday. Unlike a lot of hobbies you pick up in a studio, swing has somewhere to go. Our students routinely tell us the social calendar is the reason they kept going past lesson three — and we map the whole week out below.

01

Physical & Mental Fitness

A swing class is roughly an hour of continuous movement, and it doesn't feel like exercise. Partner dance also demands something a treadmill never does — you're tracking music, a partner, patterns, and your own footwork simultaneously. Research on partner dancing consistently associates it with benefits for balance, coordination, and cognitive function that solo exercise doesn't produce in the same way.

02

Social Connection in a New City

Atlanta is a city people move to. Swing is one of the few adult activities where meeting people is structurally built in — classes rotate partners, socials are open to anyone, and the etiquette is that you ask, and people say yes. If you've moved here and your social circle is still mostly coworkers, this is a shortcut.

03

Confidence That Follows You Out of the Studio

There is a specific relief that comes from no longer being the person standing at the edge of a wedding reception. Swing is the dance that gets you there fastest, because the basic step works with an enormous range of music — big band, blues, rockabilly, Motown, and a surprising amount of modern pop.

03 East Coast · West Coast · Lindy Hop The question every Atlanta swing search is really asking — and the one nobody local answers.

Which Swing Style Should You Learn?
East Coast vs. West Coast vs. Lindy Hop

"Swing" isn't one dance — it's a family of them. Three matter most in Atlanta, and the honest answer to which one you should start with is: it depends on the music you like and how quickly you want to be dancing. Here's the comparison nobody else will give you straight.

The Fastest Start

East Coast Swing — The Fastest Start

East Coast Swing (also called the Jitterbug) is built on a six-count rhythm: triple step, triple step, rock step. It is circular, bouncy, and endlessly adaptable, and it is the reason we start almost every complete beginner here. Learn East Coast Swing and you can dance at a wedding, a bar with a live band, or a swing social within weeks — not months. If you have one specific event coming up and limited time, this is the answer. Learn more about East Coast Swing.

The Modern Groove

West Coast Swing — The Modern, Improvisational Groove

West Coast Swing is danced in a "slot" — a narrow lane the follow travels up and down — which gives it a smooth, stretchy, elastic quality very different from the bounce of East Coast. It is the swing style that works to contemporary music: pop, R&B, hip-hop-influenced tracks. It takes a little longer to feel natural, and it rewards that patience with the deepest improvisational vocabulary of the three. Atlanta has a genuinely strong WCS community, and it is the style our students most often stick with for years. Learn more about West Coast Swing.

The Original

Lindy Hop & Charleston — The Original

Lindy Hop is where all of this started — Harlem's Savoy Ballroom in the late 1920s and 30s, danced by Frankie Manning, Norma Miller and their contemporaries to Count Basie and Chick Webb. It's built on an eight-count rhythm and the signature move, the swing out. It is the most athletic of the three and the most tied to a specific era of music. If you love 1930s and 40s jazz, this is your dance, and Atlanta's Lindy community will welcome you. See all types of swing dance.

Not sure which one is you? You don't have to decide before you walk in. Your intro lesson includes a style match — we'll dance a little of each and tell you honestly which fits your music taste, your body, and your timeline.

The community clubs around Atlanta do genuinely good work and we'll point you to them below. The difference is what you're buying: a $15 club class is a great weekly social habit; a private lesson is instruction from someone whose job is diagnosing exactly why your rock step keeps drifting. Most of our students end up doing both, and we think that's the right answer.

There are no contracts and no long-term commitment required to start.

What to Expect at Your First Swing
Lesson (No Partner Required)

The most common thing we hear after a first lesson is "that was much less scary than I thought." Here's exactly how it goes, so there are no surprises.

  1. Arrive and park

We're in Suite 1074D inside Phipps Plaza, with the mall's parking decks right there.

  2. We talk before we dance

Five minutes: what brought you in, what you want out of it, whether there's an event on the calendar.

  3. Footwork first, alone

Rock step, triple step. No partner, no pressure, no counting out loud in front of strangers.

  4. Your first pattern, with an instructor

You dance with a professional, not another nervous beginner. This is the single biggest reason our first lessons work.

  5. You dance a full song

Start to finish, to real music. This is the moment it stops being theoretical.

  6. We map what's next

Which style suits you, which format fits your schedule, and what a realistic timeline looks like. No pressure, no contract.

01

On partners

You never need one. Rotation is standard practice at every reputable swing class in Atlanta, ours included. Roughly half our students arrive alone.

02

On what to wear

Comfortable clothes you can move in, and shoes with a smooth sole that lets you pivot — leather-soled dress shoes, or anything that isn't a grippy running trainer. Avoid rubber soles; they stop your feet when your body is still turning.

03

On age

Our students range from young adults to seniors. Swing has no upper age limit. It never has.

Frequently Asked Questions About
Swing Dance Lessons in Atlanta

Group swing classes in Atlanta typically run $10–$35 per class, and private lessons generally range from about $85 to $150 per hour. Community clubs and nonprofit socials sit at the lower end; professional studios with credentialed instructors sit at the upper end. Our intro lesson is $49, which includes a private lesson and a style match.

No. You never need a partner for swing lessons in Atlanta — at our studio or anywhere reputable. Group classes rotate partners throughout, which actually makes you a better dancer than practicing with one person. About half our students arrive on their own, and private lessons are taught with a professional instructor as your partner.

East Coast Swing is a bouncy, circular six-count dance and the easiest to learn. West Coast Swing is smooth and danced in a slot, and it works with modern pop and R&B. Lindy Hop is the original eight-count swing-era dance, more athletic and tied to 1930s–40s jazz. All three are taught in Atlanta and all three are worth knowing.

East Coast Swing. It has the simplest rhythm — triple step, triple step, rock step — and it works with the widest range of music you'll actually encounter at weddings, bars, and parties. Most beginners can dance a full song of East Coast Swing after one lesson, whereas West Coast Swing and Lindy Hop typically take a few sessions to feel natural.

You can dance a basic swing pattern to music after a single 45-minute lesson. Feeling genuinely comfortable at a social dance usually takes four to eight lessons, and looking polished takes a few months of consistent practice. Swing rewards early: the gap between "total beginner" and "having fun on a dance floor" is smaller than in almost any other partner dance.

Comfortable clothes you can move and sweat lightly in, and shoes with a smooth sole that lets you pivot — leather-soled dress shoes, dance shoes, or flats. Avoid rubber-soled sneakers, which grip the floor and can twist your knee when your body turns. No special outfit or dance attire is required for a first lesson.

Our studio is inside Phipps Plaza in Buckhead, at 3500 Peachtree Road NE, Suite 1074D, Atlanta, GA 30326. We're just off GA-400 at the Lenox Road exit, minutes from Lenox Square and a short ride from Buckhead MARTA station, with mall parking on site.

Yes — most of our swing students start with zero experience. Our beginner program assumes you've never danced, can't count music, and don't have a partner. Your first lesson is one-on-one with a professional instructor specifically so you're never trying to learn a step while also managing a nervous partner.

Yes. Swing is one of the most popular first-dance choices because it looks joyful rather than formal and works with a wide range of songs. We choreograph to your specific song at your ability level, including the entrance and the ending. Book three to four months before your wedding if you can, though shorter timelines are workable.

No. Swing has no upper age limit, and our students span a wide range of ages young adults to seniors. It's a low-impact dance you can adapt to your own energy level — the basic step is the same whether you dance it gently or athletically.

Atlanta has weekly swing socials across the city: Lindy Hop nights on the Westside, Friday swing dances on the northeast side, Saturday club dances toward Doraville and Alpharetta, and West Coast Swing evenings in Buckhead. The Atlanta Swing Classic each October is the city's flagship swing weekend. We'll point you to whichever fits your style.

Yes. An hour of swing dancing is roughly an hour of continuous low-impact cardio, and it works balance, coordination, and posture in ways solo exercise doesn't. Partner dancing also carries a well-documented cognitive component — tracking music, a partner, and patterns at once. Most students find it's the only workout they don't have to talk themselves into.
