A full private lesson for the two of you — not a group class, not a consultation, not a sales meeting with a dance floor attached. You bring your song, you dance to it, and you leave knowing which style it is and roughly how a routine would be shaped around it.

Almost every first dance we choreograph in Buckhead is one of these five — and which one is yours is decided by your song, not by your taste. Here's how they differ, and where each one wants to be danced.

Nightclub Two-Step

Best for · the modern pop or R&B ballad your song probably is

The least famous style here and the one most couples end up dancing. It was invented for exactly this problem: contemporary ballads that are too slow to swing, not in three for a waltz, and without enough Latin feel for a rumba. If your song is a current radio ballad or a slow jam, this is very likely the answer — it fits a bigger share of the tracks we're handed than the other four combined.

Rumba

Best for · slow 4/4 ballads, R&B slow jams, and small floors

Latin, unhurried, and danced close together largely on one spot. That last part is what makes it the workhorse here: rumba looks intimate rather than cramped when your venue leaves you a ten-foot square between the tables. It's also the fastest way to make a slow song feel like choreography instead of swaying — and it sits naturally on the soul and R&B ballads Atlanta couples bring us more than any other kind of track.

Bachata

Best for · Latin and modern R&B-flavoured tracks

Dominican in origin, built on a simple side-to-side pattern with a hip lift on the fourth beat, danced in a close hold. It's the quickest of these five to get looking good, which is why it turns up so often when a couple has three weeks rather than three months. It also earns its place twice: learn it for the first dance and you can still be dancing it an hour into the reception.

Foxtrot

Best for · slow big-band and crooner standards

Smooth, travelling and unmistakably classic — the style behind most black-tie first dances. It moves around the floor rather than staying put, which photographs beautifully but needs room to do it, so it suits a Buckhead hotel ballroom better than a converted Westside warehouse with tables to the edge. Expect a little more work on frame and timing than the styles below.

Waltz

Best for · songs that count in threes

If your song sways in sets of three rather than four — think Moon River, or Ed Sheeran's Perfect — it's almost certainly a waltz. The rise and fall gives it that sweeping, storybook quality couples picture when they imagine a first dance. Rotational, so like foxtrot it wants a bit of floor: lovely in an estate ballroom out past Alpharetta, tight in a restaurant buyout.

What Is the Best Dance to Learn for a Wedding?

There isn't one — the best dance is whichever style matches your song. Couples usually arrive expecting to pick a dance and then find a song to fit it. It works the other way round. The track you have already chosen has a time signature, a tempo and a feel, and those three things narrow the answer to one or two styles before anyone sets foot on the floor.

And your timeline — with three weeks rather than three months, the styles that look good soonest are bachata and nightclub two-step.

That's exactly who we built this for. Around 90% of our wedding couples have never taken a dance lesson. Our Buckhead instructors break movement into simple, repeatable steps that feel natural — not robotic.

You start with a $49 intro private lesson at our Buckhead studio. After that, most couples book a small package of 3–5 private lessons; your instructor prices a program around your song, your timeline, and how much choreography you want. There's no obligation beyond the intro lesson.

We've had couples start 2 days before and still pull off a beautiful routine. That said, 3–4 weeks is the sweet spot — time to learn, practice, and feel confident without stress.

Absolutely. Whether it's a classic soul ballad, an Usher slow jam, a gospel-tinged first dance, or a surprise hip-hop mashup, we choreograph to the structure and emotion of your specific track. Bring it to your intro lesson and we'll map it out.

Yes. At most Atlanta receptions the floor fills the moment the DJ drops the Electric Slide, Cupid Shuffle, Wobble or a Soul Train line. We run through the ones your DJ is most likely to play, so you and your wedding party are leading them instead of watching from the head table. More on our line dancing classes in Atlanta.

Comfortable clothes and shoes with smooth soles. Brides should bring their wedding shoes to the final lesson so we can rehearse in them, and bring the dress or a similar-length skirt if there's a train to manage. Avoid rubber-soled sneakers — they grip the floor too much.
