Why Choose Salsa Dancing in Glen Rock?

In a world dominated by digital screens, salsa dancing offers a much-needed return to human connection. But why Glen Rock? Our studio serves as a cultural hub for residents of Ridgewood, Fair Lawn, and the surrounding North Jersey area.

Our Salsa Programs: From Beginner to Performer

We understand that everyone starts their dance journey at a different place. That’s why our curriculum is structured to support you from your very first step to your first stage performance.

Salsa 101: The Fundamentals (No Partner Required)

This is where the magic begins. Our beginner classes focus on the cross-body lead, basic footwork, and timing (Salsa on 1). We use a rotating system in our group classes, meaning you’ll dance with different people, which accelerates your learning and helps you adapt to different lead/follow styles. No partner? No problem—most of our students start solo!

Intermediate & Advanced Turn Patterns

Once you’ve mastered the basics, we challenge you with intricate partner work, shines (solo footwork), and styling. You’ll learn how to navigate a crowded social dance party with confidence, grace, and musicality.

Unlike generic community centers, we utilize a proven method for success:

Salsa Styles We Teach — On1, On2 & More

Salsa is not just one dance style. It has evolved into several distinct forms, each with its own rhythm and personality. At Dance With Glen Rock, our instructors teach the styles most commonly danced in New Jersey’s social scene.

LA-Style Salsa (On1)

Often called On1, this is the most common style taught in beginner salsa classes and seen at clubs and social events. The dancer “breaks” on the first beat of the music, creating an energetic and flowing style that’s easy to learn and highly social.

Most beginners start with On1 because it provides a clear structure and quickly builds confidence on the dance floor.

New York-Style Salsa (On2)

On2 salsa shifts the timing so the break step happens on the second beat of the music.

This style is often considered more musical and rhythm-focused, and many experienced social dancers prefer it.

While beginners usually start with On1, students who continue training often explore On2 to deepen their musicality and technique.

Cuban / Casino Style

Cuban salsa, also known as Casino, emphasizes circular movement and group interaction. While it’s less common in Atlanta social venues, it’s part of salsa’s historical roots and influences many modern styles.

What’s the difference between salsa On1 and On2?

On1 breaks on the first beat of the music and is the most common beginner style in clubs and studios. On2 breaks on the second beat and emphasizes musical interpretation and rhythm. Both use similar steps — the difference lies in timing and feel.

Dowding David

What has always been a passion for David has now become an exciting and rewarding career. David possesses an inherent musicality – gifted at an early age with a knack for playing instruments, as well as a talent for movement.

Being one of the few boys involved in theater, he was always in demand for any dance number that came around.  He became a dancing machine and continued to evolve his craft, performing often throughout his high school years.

When reaching college, David found the ballroom dance club and was quick to join. On the very first day of the second semester at the University of Connecticut, the dance coach personally recruited David to join the competitive team.

For the next six years, David traveled with the UCONN dance team throughout the Northeast, competing in the USABDA circuit in all four styles. During two of his final years at UConn, the team was left without a coach and David successfully stepped up to take on the responsibility of training the team.

After moving to New York, David soon found himself teaching full-time. During his teaching tenure with multiple well-known dance franchises, David competed professionally in the American Smooth category. Striving for more opportunity, David joined the Dance With Me family in 2013.
